The earth beneath his feet is sturdy and hot, flat as far as the eye can see and it's perfect. It isn't a friendly place to be, life is hard and feels as if it hangs on the whim of a fickle god. Even so, the people here relish every moment. They approach everything with energy and funnel their efforts into community. There isn't anything he could ask for, this small world is all he has ever known and everything he has ever wanted.

Until a visitor arrives with stories of a broader horizon, beyond the desert and the unflinching gaze of the sun overhead. His world grows, along with his desires. This family is everything, there is nothing more valuable in all of the world. It's not enough.

So one day he kisses his mother goodbye as she sleeps, lays a hand on the heads of his younger siblings, and steps into the unrelenting chill of the night. But the world he has is all he knows and the journey almost ends prematurely. He hadn't been prepared. It was far more vast than he could have ever thought, food and water ran out before he even saw a shape on the horizon. He walked until his feet bled, until he couldn't think anymore, until his eyes felt as if they would crumble like parchment. He didn't make it. Only by the kindness of strangers and the mercy of a fickle god did he rise again after falling.

For a time his life was more confined then it had ever been, bedbound and pained as his body tried to recover from the journey. Growth, in one way or another, always hurt though didn't it? It hurt when he was just a boy and his body was starting to become that of a man's, it hurt when his father died and he had to learn how to live without him, and it hurt now as he held onto his new life with burned and battered hands.

Waves crashed outside, gulls called out to each other, the smell of the sea was carried to his sickbed on a warm breeze, and the desire to see it for himself pained him more than any injury could.

Finally, finally he was able to leave this room. Standing on the beach, sand beneath his feet and a chill that was not unfamiliar to him from home, something changed in him. The vastness of the desert, the vastness of the sea before him, it was so much. He watched the ships come and go from the port and he spoke to the people that disembarked, or at least he spoke to those he could. Some spoke in other tongues just as they had different customs and wore different clothing. It was too much. Every moment there was something new, every day there was a discovery that completely shifted his perspective. He met so many people and became fast friends with some, many were patient and others cast him away as a nuisance.

He loved it all.

It wasn't enough.

Would it ever be enough?

Maybe not.

The lush green of the forest and the earthy scents as he pulled moss up between his fingers. The way his eyes watered and his nose itched in a field of flowers as tall as his waist. Failed after failed attempt at capturing a fish and dragging it out of the river next to burned down lumber mill, the woman with one hand who instructed him under a harsh glare and chopped the wood for a fire that would cook his prize. The bite of a frost whose jaws he felt he'd be trapped in for an eternity, how blinding the view from the top looked when he'd crested the peak of a mountain and that same cold became nothing but the most incredible thing he'd ever seen.

LIKES: Kana, adventure, novelty, the wind at his back, the scent of campfire smoke, the very distant nostalgia of the desert horizon, the exhilaration of near death.
DISLIKES: Stagnation, stillness, stability, the general concept of being bound to anything either literally or metaphorically, and Kana.
