81776604.png “Oh what are we going to do with you, little one?” he mused to himself, turning over the small egg in his claws, gently caressing the cracked shell with claws. He had found the little egg near a riverbank, next to several other smashed eggs and the remains of a hen. Some beast had found her nestled in the brush and had mistaken her for a meal, smashing her many little eggs in the process. This pale white egg, just a few shades off from snow itself, was the last egg of her brood. Boterham nodded to himself, continuing to mutter gentle words to the little egg, and began to make his way back to his clan. Dragons were fond of familiars, companions they kept by their sides to protect them and fight alongside them. As he was in need of neither, Boterham thought that he could keep the little chick inside as a simple friend, a companion to brighten his travels. It was not difficult to warm the egg, to keep it safe. Despite the cracks, the chick inside hatched with no defects, and its feathers gleamed like ice in the sun, as if it held the glory of the very clouds in winter upon its feathers. When it hatched, Boterham proudly presented him to the rest of the clan. Many of them thought him silly for caring for such a little thing, but others saw the joy that it had brought Boterham and felt their own hearts lifted looking at the little chick.

DBL4.png It was a fond pastime of Boterham's to weave stories for the young hatchlings on starry nights, to watch their eyes gleam in the starlight as they wondered about the world around them. He never lied to them, never claimed that the world they lived in was not as dark as it truly was, but he told them the beautiful stories more often than the dark ones. The stories of light glinting off the ocean, of clouds shining silver just before a rainstorm, of the tadpoles in the springtime as they fought a valiant battle against the strong currents. Boterham filled their eyes and minds with wonder so that they would live to travel the world for themselves. It was easy enough to see the darkness, but the light was often sky and needed coaxing out. As he shared more and more stories, he noticed more often that the grown dragons would sit close enough to listen, their ears perked in his direction. This always brought a smile to his face, brought a serene peace to his heart, knowing that they yearned for these stories of light and happiness as well. “Now little ones,” he would whisper. “You know of the stars in the sky. Each of those stars is a dragon’s wish. The more you wish, the more you hope, the brighter that star will become. Look for your star in the night. Do you see it? The brightest star can be yours if you wish it to be.”

DBL4.png There were stories now, of a pale blossom dragon who spread hope and love throughout dragon clans. His words were said to melt the ice of the tundra dragons, to chisel to the core of the snapper dragons, and even tame the wild nature of spirals. Words that were filled with such happiness, light, and hope that even the ever dark Shade could not penetrate. His words were powerful, but they could never last forever. They say that Boterham's words would echo throughout the land fading in the wind. The scent of the blossoms he wore would fade with time, their pastel colors blurring with the world around them. Most dragons would forget his name, even his stories. But none could forget the way that those words had made them feel, how they had each felt like a small hatchling once more, looking out at the world with such wonder that they had never experienced before. Wonder that had them looking at their world in a new way, with new hope unfurling across their wings as they would take to the skies and spread that same feeling. Boterham would not last forever, no dragon could, but no dragon would forget the peace and happiness that he had once brought them. That feeling would remain with them for the rest of their lives.
