zbR5CoB.png That howling in the darkness comes from Kaetiul, a wolfish dragon with a ghostly gleam in her eyes. For the most part, she tends to keep to herself, skulking about in corners and clinging to shadows. She’s stoic, a little broody, and a tad intimidating. This earns her a reputation that doesn’t quite match up with reality. The truth is that this ghoulish Gaoler is empathetic and loyal. She’s pack-bonded with her clan so closely that if anything were to threaten it, she’d be the first to leap to its defense. With her steadfast dedication and her razor-sharp instincts, she is a valuable asset to any group. Behind her domineering stature is a heart of gold. She can even be rather playful if she’s in the mood for it. For the most part however, she spends her days alone. She hunts, runs through the forest, and discovers new spots to bury her treasures. Kaetiul is fairly independent. She’s not cranky– she just prefers her own company, so solitude suits her just fine.

This strange dragon loves finding old, interesting bones. Upon discovering a new specimen, she’ll immediately start sniffing for a place to hide it. Thanks to her supreme sense of smell, she knows the precise location of everything she has ever buried. If she accidentally hides a trinket belonging to another clan member (which has, admittedly, happened more than once), she’ll retrieve the item without delay. Kaetiul’s collections of bones and treasures are for gnawing on, or playing tug-o-war. She’s not particularly elegant with her games. She just likes the feel of sinking her teeth into things. When she eats, she tears her food apart without using her claws. It’s slightly unnerving, if not a little disgusting. The other dragons give her a wide berth whenever she starts to dig in because they know how protective she is over her food. “Feral” is one word for it. “Canine” is another. Her clanmates jokingly wonder if she might be part dog. Kaetiul finds this assumption endlessly amusing and will wag her tail in agreement, which makes everybody laugh. The silliness creates cracks in her menacing facade. She really is just a goofball, deep down.

Haunting Houndskull
Kaetiul is a bit of a mess. She often comes back from her expeditions covered in dirt and questionable smells. She’s not one for cleanliness, often sprinting around the lair and sending soap flying everywhere whenever she tries to bathe. Or, rather, when other dragons try to bathe her, since she isn’t likely to do it on her own. She claims that if she can’t smell another dragon properly, she can’t trust them. Thus, she ensures that she always possesses a supremely distinct scent. This is yet another one of her strangely wolf-like behaviors. She also howls at the moon (especially when it’s full), play-bows when she’s having fun, and pulls back her lips in a snarl when she’s unhappy. Kaetiul is truly and unequivocally herself. Her clanmates respect her for this, even if they do find it odd. If she wants to spend her days burying sticks and screaming at the night sky, that’s her business. They wouldn’t want to get in her way.

Kaetiul appears to be mostly nocturnal. She can be found snoozing in patches of sun during the day, waiting for night to arrive. When it does, she shakes herself awake and begins her rounds. First, she checks on her sleeping clanmates to make sure they’re okay. Some of them have awoken to a pair of bright red eyes boring into them in the dark. They usually yelp, realize it’s only Kaetiul, sigh, and go back to sleep. Next, the Gaoler takes a wide patrol loop around the lair, sniffing every rock and tree as she goes. She wants to ensure that her territory and all her loved ones within it are protected. Finally, when she’s certain it’s safe, she begins her sprint through the forest. Kaetiul is one of the fastest dragons in the lair. She moves through the blackness like a spirit. Once she gets going, nothing can stop her– not even a tree root or loose rock, both of which she deftly avoids. There’s hardly anyone who can keep pace with her, let alone outrun her. She finds freedom in the wind whipping her face and the leaves getting caught in her mane. This is what brings her the most joy. She runs so fast it’s almost impossible to see her feet hit the ground. Kaetiul looks like she’s levitating. It’s magnificent to witness. Each night, she runs faster and farther through the wilderness. Dragons who witness her journey worry that someday she might lose her way, but they have little to worry about. Kaetiul can follow her nose to find her way home. She’s always back in her lair by sunrise, sleeping off the prior night’s excursions. Occasionally her feet will twitch, as if she’s remembering her mad sprint through the dark. She’s admired immensely for her vigor. It’s easy to imagine that somewhere inside of her is the spirit of a ghostly wolf. She embodies this spirit well. This wolf-dragon knows who she is– and she’ll never let anyone forget it.
