Keen, like Selassie, was the product of breeding between two betrothed dragons to strengthen certain genetic combinations in the family. However unlike Selassie, he was a success. He was much admired for Robin egg blue colouring and beautifully patterned plumage. And his quiet authority made him respected among dragons in the Crystal Sages. In a short time he was able to become a trusted guard of the Elders.

Adephon and Selassie left, to look for the clan in Adephon's vision. However the Elders soon worried for him. They sent Keen after the dragon couple with the task to bring back Adephon. Wanting to impress them and further his own reputation, Keen gladly agreed. It did not take him long to find the missing dragon couple but when he approached Adephon with his request to return, the Crystal pearlcatcher refused. He had started to build a life with Selassie in a place where they were accepted.

Keen did not want to return a failure, he attacked Adephon but his attack loosened a cave stone that trapped his leg. He was stuck, on the outskirts of a strange clan and even worse, his former crystal Sages acted like he didn't exist. However Keen binded his time. He watched the clan as they worked, together, each with their own tasks. It was efficient, and despite their factions they all got along. As he observed it wasn't long before he caught the attention of a strange spiral dragon who he'd later learn was the taskmaster if alchemy. She'd help him heal and slowly change his mind about the clan. When he recovered, Keen apologized to Adephon and the two returned to the sages to tell them they were staying with the clan.
