The moon is shrouded in clouds. It is getting late. The stars fall away. It will only get later.

The forest is full of shadows. You are one of them. Long hair over tattered clothes and a lantern in your hand, backpack slung over your shoulder. Trees are silhouetted against the darkened sky. The travelers call and call and your lantern leads them away from the path and far into the woods. Tiny lights seem to dance in the trees, and every sound is electrifying. As their feet slip into the bog their vision goes double. Two lanterns. Four eyes. A lot of very sharp teeth. It was too late for them. But you can save yourself, dearest. I promise. Just keep to the well-trodden paths, never stray after twilight. Don't look up. You are behind them. You don't always need a lantern; it's more fun when they can see your face.
