The entry is written in faded ink, a date scrawled at the top of the page next to a short title that reads “Dust to Dust”. It is the account of a grave keeper, Henry Balding regarding a strange headstone that appeared in the Hewn Graveyard.

“In my line of work, you have to prepare yourself to see some disturbing things. I work in the Hewn Graveyard - the one at the edge of the Hewn City where that strange Moonportal is located. I’ve been there for many years, digging graves and tending to the land. It’s simple things mostly like picking up any stray trash and keeping up with the landscaping. I also make all of the gravestones and statues, so I found it odd when a headstone I had not created appeared on a previously unmarked plot a few weeks back.

Occasionally, guests will bring their own offerings to the graveyard, and I thought that must be where this headstone had come from as well. It was well-crafted from shimmering marble inlaid with streaks of stone that gleamed almost like spilled oil. Still, it looked quite old and cracked and I could not tell whether a name and date were never carved upon it or if they had simply faded away with time. There were only a few words still legible at the bottom of the stone that read “dust thou art and unto dust thou shalt return”.

I didn’t think much of that headstone for a while. It was not so out of place in the cemetery that it seemed cause for concern. Still, a few weeks after it appeared, several visitors who came to pay their respects at the cemetery began to vanish.

The first time, a mother came up to me asking if I had seen her son. “He was just here, right beside me. . . and then he was gone”. I helped her search, asking if she could take me to the location where she had last seen him. “Here” she said when we finally climbed a small knoll at the edge of the cemetery. It was the resting place of her father, she said sadly.

I thought it unlikely that the child could have wandered far - after all from atop the small hill most of the cemetery could be seen and there were few trees or other shrubbery for a child to hide behind. I helped her search for an additional hour before we called for help, but there was no trace of a child. In fact, a few of the investigators who showed up claimed that the child simply couldn’t have existed in the first place.

“See here” one of them said, “there aren’t even footprints”. Indeed, his mother’s prints were visible before the grave, but throughout the cemetery where she had walked, not a single print from a child was visible in the muddied ground.

Still, I sat on that hill as the sun set and while I never saw any traces of the child, I did notice that new headstone. It had moved up to the top of that hill. I found it unsettling that I had not noticed it earlier and I found myself wondering how it had found its way from the center of the cemetery all the way here.

Over the next several days, several more visitors were reported missing by family and friends. All of them supposedly had come to the cemetery, and had not been heard from since. I saw that headstone a few more times, always in a different place throughout the grounds. I feel sometimes like there’s something else wandering about the cemetery too. Sometimes, the shadows seem to stretch longer than they used to and I feel as if they swirl on occasion with strange movement.

Just in case this is related to that headstone, I decided to take the thing down. I’ve locked it in the storage shed for the time being, but sometimes, late at night I almost feel like I hear a strange sound. As if something were knocking on the door of that little shed, waiting to be freed.

We attempted to follow up with Henry Balding regarding his account and found that he had been arrested and charged with the disappearances of those who visited the Hewn Cemetery. The gravestone he described was not present either within the shed, nor was it found anywhere in the cemetery.

We were able to visit briefly with Henry, although he did not add much to his account. He would only mutter over and over the words “dust thou art and unto dust thou shalt return”.
