Betelgeuse // Alpha Orionis - Red Supergiant

Betelgeuse is the second brightest star in the Orion constellation, the brightest being Rigel at the
opposite end of the constellation. Alpha Orionis is a runaway star with an unknown birthplace - it moves at 30km/s and creates a bow-shock - a bow-shaped displacement of ambient interstellar
plasma - over four lightyears wide.

Its brightness changes regularly which has been observed by Australian aboriginal groups for at least the past 1.000 years. At the time it was classified with a Bayer Designation, it likely outshone Rigel, which led to their designations being flipped regarding their actual brightness levels.

In October of 2019, Betelgeuse suddenly dimmed outside of its normal rhythm and range and was widely expected to go supernova, even though this event is expect to occur in about 100.000 years and was considered unlikely by experts. In February of 2020 it showed signs of rebrightening.

Between May and August Betelgeuse is very close to the sun, which renders it unobservable from the ground. This unexpected dimming was likely caused by large-grain interstellar dust, rather than any changes of star itself, since no change in infrared light levels was recorded.
