The African Wild Dog is most commonly found in... you guessed it Africa! This species will rarely be found in solitude as they are an extremely social species. They can be found living in a pack size ranging from 2-27 adults and yearling pups. For seasonal migration there can be hundreds together at once. There are separate dominance hierarchies within a group for males and females. Males outnumber females 3:1 and will remain in their original pack while the females will disperse females from other packs and remove them to prevent inbreeding. The females of the pack are led by the oldest female and the males are led by the oldest males.
Their gestation lasts till 69-73 days and then they do not breed again for 12-14 months. The litter can range from 6-16 pups, and they average around 10. The dominant female is the main breeder, and she protects the pups while the rest of the pack hunts. The pups are weaned at 5 weeks and at age 8-10 weeks they leave the den and follow the pack on the hunt.
