We had three eggs in our first clutch. I write these notes for an anomaly surfaced already.
The third egg persistently covers itself in a layer of mold, despite our best efforts to get rid of it. We placed it in a quarantine nest before it could infect the other eggs, and we are concerned this egg will not make it to term. We watch it with just as much attention as the normal eggs, so any incidents cannot be attributed to neglect. The egg has started to rock as its siblings do. We are cautiously optimistic that this one will make it after all. The mold still persists, but strangely does not spread beyond the shell of the egg. I will include more observations as events of note arise. It has been a couple days since my last note. The two normal eggs have started to pip. We expect the hatchlings to emerge within the day. The moldy anomaly has stopped rocking, and no pip marks have appeared on the shell. Sorrow believes the hatchling didn’t make it, but I remain uncertain. It’s been almost the whole day. The two that emerged we’ve decided to name Despair and Crux, and we continue to watch the anomaly. [Indecipherable scribbles] The anomaly has started to escape the egg. His claws are a sickly green, like they were filled with a poison most vile. Stranger still, the nest under his claws appears to rot and grow mold and fungus. It’s apparent that the mold coating over the shell was overflow of this strange power. We decided to name him Decay. I hatched apart from my brothers. My parents stared when I came out, every step leaving rot in my wake. According to them, my abilities are strange, and so far I haven’t been allowed to touch my siblings. Letting me touch them was clearly a hesitant decision, but they seemed to be curious. My touch can’t rot dragons. The mushrooms I create with my rot other dragons reject, calling them poison and dangerous. Weird, I find them delicious. Maybe they would too, if they only agreed to try one! …I made a mistake. A hatchling agreed to try one of my mushrooms. He won’t wake up, I don’t know how to fix this! Instead I hid the traces of my mushrooms. No one realized what I’d done. The grownups were in a fit over this. Strange… The reaction to the accident gave me a warm feeling inside… Dad says it’s a good feeling, and that our family strives to chase the satisfaction of causing trouble. He and mom are smart, so I guess they’re right. When I get full control over this ability, I will be able to decide what decays. The control is tantalizing, but if I’m being honest… My name is Decay, and I find joy in reducing everything around me to ruin. |
