Quote:
Of my two Living Dolls, the first – Noche – is the more quiet and reserved. She is an observer, it seems. Cold. Cool. Calculating. Her silence may be confused for meekness among the various fools who seem to occupy this world, but she and I know better, and those who make this mistake are swiftly corrected.

I learned this during our first chess game. She loves games, this one, and chess has seemed to be her favorite. The match initially seemed to be moving in my favor. After thirty-three moves, nearly all of her pieces had been cleared from the board whereas my army seemed comparatively well intact. I had already dodged a handful of attempts to lure me into obvious traps, but was nonetheless rather pleased at Noche’s performance thus far. She was but a novice, after all, and I had been playing the game for years.

Her stitched face had remained expressionless in our intellectual contest. I am not even certain she blinked through the duration of our match. But just as I had convinced myself that I had bested my creation, I noticed the corners of her mouth had curved into a small grin.

She moved her bishop and whispered, “Checkmate.”

I scoffed, fully prepared to correct her, but realized after scanning the board that she had indeed cornered my King with her Bishop and Knight. She had fully and completely bested me: an outcome I did not think possible.

Her smile widened into a full grin. She then snickered and began fully laughing at me, the fool who thought he had her beat. She chuffed and giggled for a while before finally informing me that she had this outcome planned from the start, and had delighted in the knowledge that I had sincerely believed I was about to win our little game of chess.

Noche had been toying with me, like a predator teasing its prey. At first I was embarrassed, but my humiliation swiftly passed, for I had created a being whose mind for strategy surpassed even my own.
