Here's the problem with experimenting with poorly understood portal-related technology capable of transporting people to other planets or even other universes: it's just a tiny bit dangerous, and most of NC's scientists are... well, scientists, nothing more and nothing less. Zareni's job is really quite simple: carry a big gun, be the first one through the portal, make sure it's safe, and get the squishy scientists back home alive. Of course, in practice it's never that easy. Zareni herself spent most of her early years in the service of the Gladekeeper. An encounter with a Shade-touched being, Ctyrka, got the rest of her entire team killed before an NC team led by Borasca showed up to contain the situation. Zareni was... confrontational, to say the least, and demanded answers. When she refused to back down, they decided to bring her back to the Vigilance as well, though they were very conflicted on how they would handle the situation if she didn't want to stay with them- she was working directly for the Gladekeeper, after all, and her word might not be dismissed as traumatized rambling, so letting her leave wouldn't be an option. What were they going to do? Keep her there against her will? Kill her? Were they really capable of that? Thankfully it never came to that. Zareni's rage at the Shade quickly twisted to a deep grudge against the Eleven. She'd already become tired and disillusioned with the seemingly endless and meaningless war against the Plaguebringer; in NC, she saw a chance to start over, a chance to use her unique talents for something truly meaningful. The Inner Sanctum, the branch of NC operating in the territory of the Eleven for espionage and research purposes, consists mostly of scientists-turned-agents with very little combat experience, so when Zareni isn't the first one setting foot on uncharted worlds, she tags along on any missions that might go very south. She might only have a vague idea what the hell the exobiologists are talking about, but at least she can do a damn good job keeping the poor nerds safe. |
