Formerly a blacksmith for Redfield, she didn't have much passion for her work, but she was talented and liked feeling useful to her community. Her parents hid NC from her for years in an attempt to protect her from their dangerous work and she was mostly raised by the community of Redfield with no knowledge of what her mostly-absent parents were actually doing, until they realized it had become too big to keep it from her any longer when she was an adult and decided to suddenly destroy the nice stable life she'd made for herself in one fell swoop. She joined NC out of a sense of moral obligation, but finding out someone has spent the past two decades lying to you will do a number on you, so her relationship with her parents is... strained. Her sister Juniper still doesn't know; Cedar convinced her parents not to tell her.
After her world got basically turned upside down, she channeled her anger and frustration and lack of understanding into something constructive, latching onto the nascent field of portal physics. However, spending the rest of her life running simulations and experiments in shiny white labs in a secret base at the bottom of the ocean lacked excitement; she couldn't stand being shut in all the time.
The difficulty of creating portals that led to precisely predetermined locations, and the sudden potential of being able to explore previously inaccessible places, called for a team of explorers and experts- an idea that Cedar proposed to the Council, and was granted permission to oversee. Cedar is currently the leader of the small but highly trained and extremely skilled SAE (Spacetime Anomaly Exploration) team, a hand-picked group whose initial purpose of ensuring the safety of the handful of newly-opened permanent portals in the Vigilance base quickly pivoted to purely exploration of alien worlds and hostile environments.
