Siouxsie’s (probably obnoxiously long, unprompted, but very much passionate) speech about spiders:
Spiders tend to get a bad rap. They’re mainstays of horror movies and haunted houses, and many are terrified to find a spider lurking in our homes. However, the truth is that people’s fear of spiders is mostly unwarranted.
Of the more than 4,000 spider species found in the contiguous United States, most are harmless to humans. There are only two “medically significant” genera of spiders that range in the United States: Latrodectus (family Theridiidae), aka "widow spiders", and Loxosceles (family Sicariidae), aka "recluse spiders.” However, even these species would sooner flee from a human than act defensively (unless they feel they are being crushed).
Spider venom does not exist to harm creatures, like humans, that are too large for spiders to eat. In nearly all cases, spider venom has little if any effect on humans. In many cases, spider fangs are unable to pierce human skin. In many cases, photos that circulate online of what is said to be the aftermath of a spider bite is typically a bacterial infection from the wound not healing properly, rather than damage from a devastating venom.
Overall, spiders are beneficial because they provide natural (and free!) pest control for your home and yard. Before blasting them with pesticide, squishing them, or getting hysterical – remember that they are far more afraid of you and will almost always try to flee from a human!
TLDR: spiders are misunderstood frens
I handle them regularly, keep spiders (and tarantulas!) as pets, and have never been bitten :D
