Grove

WHACK.
The kusarigama swung against the tree bark. It only released its grip when pulled, and the wood was merely bruised.
The Nocturne wielding it exasperated in frustration. He groaned and shook the chains in anger.
``WHY. WONT. YOU. WORK?! ``
Grove had been training with the new weapon he forged ever since he visited that town. He’d been living in the undergrowth for years, but just about a month ago he learned of what he was to protect.
He dropped the mace, unsheathing the axe on the other end.
``Rightyo, this should work.. `` He’d position the blade and focus. ``HYAH! ``
Grove sent the axe flying, nearly throwing it. It clashed against the sturdy tree, thudding as it hit the ground.
He could’ve screamed. Instead he flew right up to the mocking plant and gave it a good kick. He held in his yelps now, hopping on one foot.
Grove continued to stare at the wood, using his new arm guards to pack some punches. That didn’t help his pain.
He panted, holding up the necklace he was also gifted and grasping it firmly.
Grove forced himself to take a deep breath, and don the pendant again.
His eyes grew wide as he watched the gemstone woven into the lace glow. He desperately wanted to throw it off, but something paused him.
A stag was forming from the stone.
Grove watched as it danced around, and disappeared into his kusarigama. The weapon hovered. It was as if a ghost was practising with it.
The blade swung forward, hooking into the bark. Then it was tugged back, splinters of wood stuck to the axe.
Then they were thrown up, and the mace came flying back. Crashing the tree-bits into the ground.
Grove was in awe as the weapon dropped and the magical stag stood by his side.
He stared, then nodded. He’ll probably need all the help he could get. He was filled with a new confidence as he picked the kusarigama up and held it at his axe.
With a powerful flick of his wrist, he let the blade fly towards the tree. It hooked into it like a grapple.
Then, he shoved the chain back to his chest. A deep gash was in the bark now as he expertly swapped towards the mace side.
Grove used his shoulder to fling the spike up into the gash. It barely made a difference, but it became deeper. Seems like the hatchet is more effective for a tree.
He nodded to himself. If that was an actual dragon, he could use the blade to strike the heart. Then the mace to hit the head and knock them down using the same motion. They’d be dead in moments.
Grove gave a light smile to the stag. A new strategy..
Who knew that worthless piece of jewellery was his new teacher?
