Biography
Abilene bears the look of one who has seen too much. Her eyes are shallow and lightless. Her fiery red hair is messy, its natural luster diminished by a thin layer of coal dust. Her arms, though rife with muscle, hang uselessly at her sides, the pickaxe she carries leaving dragmarks on the ground. She stares absently, speaks only when spoken to, and walks about as though each day is a dull dream. Abilene remembers little of her childhood. Days in the gunsmithing workshop, driven only by sweltering heat and the hiss of something trapped within the steel, to be hammered free like a statue from marble. She was never interested in the craft. But supplementing it, providing coal to be burnt and ores to be worked into mechanisms, that called to her. When she walked into the mine, she wondered if she would ever come back out. She wonders that more and more now, as the darkness calls her deeper, its promises hissed through cracks in the stone. Children who grow up in the workshop maintained by Conleth and Idalia are odd. Though they are gifted with an intimate knowledge of the internal workings of nearly all things mechanical, and any clan in search of a machinist or metallurgist would be hard-pressed to find a better choice, there are things about them that seem… wrong. For some, it’s minor things; maybe the smoke of the forge seems to linger around them, or their eyes drift into a glazed stare when they look upon an assembled pistol. The way their shadows seem to writhe and change, or how they jerk like they’ve been startled awake when they stare into the turning gears for too long. For others, though, well… let’s just say you’d be better off getting a less experienced mechanic to do your maintenance work than allowing them into your home.
