Biography

Dusty Marigold ENA

"Gales of song, guide me through the storm.”
──────────✽──────────

The westward wind rang in the eventual coming of autumn, rustling the feathers at the back of Ereshkigal’s neck. With it, came harvest festivals to celebrate preparing oneself for the long dark days of winter.
“And what a taste it has,” Ereshkigal muttered to herself, bouncing a half-eaten apple in the palm of her hand. She was currently watching two dragons wrestle each other in a sizable sandpit. Before that, there had been dancing and singing she considered and promptly decided against. Kismet could do the dancing for her.

Her gaze drifted off to a lavender and wheat decorated in which said beautiful dancer was currently entertaining a small crowd. She has to press her eyes shut to stop herself from going over there. She takes another annoyed bite off her apple. “Stupid godlings and their wiles.” One of these days she was going to figure out how his powers even worked.

A stray strand of wheat hits the side of her face. She swats it away, looking up to glare at the wheat-spangled rafters of the pavilion. There was someone perched in them. His dark hair mostly obscured his features, only his proud smile gleaming in the dark. He was tall, dark and achingly familiar.

She sprang up from the bench, flipping on her cloak. To the best of her capabilities she tried to stuff her unruly crimson hair under the dark fabric. She slid to a halt by the far outer pole of the pavilion, clinging to it as she stared up at the man. Her nails dragged along the soft wood.
There was a smoldering flicker underneath the tumultuous power this man housed that she knew well. She’d spent ages chasing it in a man named Adam, to refine it into a herald for her masters. Not that it had worked, the one son she considered her chosen had been spirited away by his father to the land of the dead.

Before she can make up her thoughts regarding her approach, the man has slipped down and landed by Kismet. Had Adam always been this tall? Silently, she slipped closer, keeping herself hidden amongst the crowd. A few people were beginning to move on to other venues.

“Do you think it was maybe too much?” Kismet’s voice is gentle as ever when he speaks. “Maybe next time it could be less sweeping and dramatic.”

“No, no, it looked great to me,” the stranger says, covering his smile with his hand. “I was plenty enraptured. If you don’t watch out, everyone here might just fall at your feet and worship you.”

“Now that’s dramatic.” A laugh escaped Kismet. Ereshkigal rubs her temples.
She slithers closer to the men until she’s rather obviously eavesdropping on them from a meter's distance. Kismet turns his head to look at her. The little dangling decorations on his outfit jingle as he clasps his hands together. “Oh, you’re back! You ran off last time.”

Ereshkigal’s pink eyes momentarily scan along Kismet before squarely falling upon the man beside him. “Yes. Sorry. I had something urgent to attend to,” she says carefully, flicking her hood off. “But I can’t resist a party.”

A long moment passes amongst the three of them. The stranger and Ereshkigal stare at one another. He actually has the hall to flash a thin smile.

Kismet’s gaze darts between her and the stranger. His brother. “… You and Dima already know each other?” He says, smile faltering somewhat. “Ah.”

“That, we do,” Dima says. He’s clenching his teeth hard enough to be audible. “So-“

“Adam.” Ereshkigal takes a careful shuffle forward. For a moment she thinks Dima isn’t going to run away.
Dima turns and starts running, nearly bowling over a handful of people in the pavilion.

Kismet cries out in alarm. “Hello?! Don’t just run, at least-“ He takes a long look at Ereshkigal. “What did you do?”

“What didn’t I do, pretty boy?” She shrugs, her cloak fluttering slightly. “Come on, let’s catch him.” She promptly drags Kismet along, the lanky tall man nearly waving like a flag behind her as she takes off running.

“Exactly my luck-“ Dima skids precariously around another corner, deeper into Lanternlea port. He hadn’t put enough distance between himself and Ereshkigal to warrant ducking in a passing building and he didn’t feel like stopping to hear her out. His senses were starting to burn with painful reminiscence, with having fled the woman in a past life.

Funny, the way things caught up with him.

He rounds another corner. He could hear Ereshkigal’s cackling echo from up the street. If he just could reach the docks and quickly slip onto a ship, he could be safe for a little bit until there was a possibility to fly back.

A shadow blots out the sun above him. “Dima!” Kismet’s vast wingspan shimmers in the sunlight above Dima.

Dima slowed ever so slightly. Maybe Kismet was here to help. “Mind saving your brother for once?” He says, grinning up with his hand outstretched as his pace slows to a jog.

“Uh, no, I actually-“ Before Kismet can continue his sentence, Ereshkigal leaps off Kismet’s back. “Sorry!”

“You traitor! You dumb pink feather duster of a man!” Dima screeches, immediately ducking into a nearby bar as Ereshkigal crashes into the street behind him. He would have a strongly worded conversation with him later. “Make way!” He cries out, urging patrons to dive out of the way.

“Ladies first!” Ereshkigal crashes into the building, hopping over a few men as she chases Dima. She wears a toothy smile, her sharp teeth shining in the low light. “You’ve gotten slower!”

Dima slips and crashes into a table. He props himself up against it, bracing himself as Ereshkigal crashes into him. His head is knocked back against the table. She ends up awkwardly straddling him. “Can’t a man enjoy the finer things in life?” He groans, cracking an eye open. “Without being chased by a delusional broad?”

“I take offense to that,” she hums. She casts a brief glare into the room. Most of the patrons nervously turn around and return to their drinks.
Ereshkigal returns her attention to Dima. She grabs his swatting hand to pin it to the table. “… When did you get so… Beefy?” She tilts her head. “You’re Adam alright, but last I saw you you were-“

“Yeah, yeah, like a stiff wind could blow me over,” Dima snaps. “Also, It’s Dismas now. Stop sizing me up and just get to the point. What do you want?”

“You know what I want,” she says, digging her nails in a little. Her voice shudders a little, her gaze occasionally drifting off. “Well… Truth be told, Zagreus is not the only thing I want.”

Dima raises an eyebrow. “Just so you know, I’m humoring you. I could easily eradicate you if we weren’t in a highly populated area.” His eye twitches a little.

“I’m sure you could, godling,” Ereshkigal says. “I-“

“Excuse me…?” Kismet’s wavering voice interrupts the two of them. “You two can catch up in less compromising ways. Or in a place that isn’t in public for that matter.”

“Honey, if I let your brother go I won’t find him again until I’ve gained a few extra gray feathers,” Ereshkigal says, puffing her chest out. “It’s everyone else’s problem they’re here.”

“Hold on-“ Dima takes a shaky breath. “You two know each other?”

“Oh yes!” Kismet says, sounding a little too chipper for the current circumstances. “She’s come by before. I know you two are acquainted as well.”

Ereshkigal presses her lips into a thin line and looks away.

Dima’s gaze darts between Kismet and Ereshkigal. Realization dawns on his face. “Oh… That…” He knocks the back of his head against the table. “I knew it. You disreputable harlot, laying your hands on my brother too?”

“That’s not very nice to say, she can be nice when she wants to be.” Kismet crosses his arms. His gaze slowly lowers to the floor. “Some of the time.”

“Can we not interrogate my character at this moment?” Ereshkigal slips off Dima with a sigh. After a moment, she yanks hard enough at Dima’s leg to send him flying off the table with a scream. She turns to look at him as he tries to peel himself off the floor. “One evening. Hear me out for one evening.”

Dima sits up, taking Kismet’s now outstretched hand. With his other hand he rubs the back of his head. “Can Kismet stick around for this or is this a private rendezvous?”

“What do you think?” Her glare falls away as she returns her gaze to Kismet. “Thanks for the lift by the way, sweetheart. I’ll try not to suddenly disappear on you tomorrow morning.” She holds up her hand. “Promise.”

“Leave him in one piece, please,” Kismet says, bowing his head slightly. Ereshkigal takes the opportunity to kiss his cheek. “On that, I take my leave. Someone has to dance.”

“And you do it so well, songbird,” Ereshkigal says fondly, stepping back. “Now shoo. Leave me to do my dark bidding.” She waves after Kismet as he darts out the door.

Dima’s left staring blankly at the space Kismet stood. He doesn’t look up until Ereshkigal grabs his arm. “… You like him, don’t you?” He says in a hushed tone.

“How do you want me to answer that?” Ereshkigal snaps. A fine blush begins to warm her cheeks. “What’s it to you?”

Dima tugs at the white streak in his hair, regarding her with narrowed eyes. “Nothing. And here I was thinking you were heartless.” A pause. “It’s just his power, you know-“

Ereshkigal digs her nails in again. “You’re still just as annoying as your former self. At least I can be certain it’s you.” She promptly begins to drag Dima along to the second floor of the bar. “Come on, you stupid hunk.”

Dima allows himself to be dragged along, questioning her phrasing the entire way.
