How Hurricane Became the First Sharkspirit Spiral
t5s91jz.png "I want to invite Spirals into our clan," Lauren the Lar said.

The Sharkspirit Clan's resource and operation coordinator, Zuu, looked at her quizically and asked, "What made you decide that?"

"I saw some in the exaltee contracting section of the Trading Post and decided I had to have some. Do we have the means to get and keep them?"

"Well..." he started, trying to figure out a gentle way to discourage his often one-track-minded boss, "...it would take a significant amount of effort to rearrange the lair to add a section with plenty of napping spots for them, and our food budget would have to increase, not to mention we have to take into account how the other breeds would feel about it. I just don't think it's a venture we should pursue right now."
"Zuu, is it doable or not?"

"It's doable," he sighed, getting up from the cushion he'd been laying on. "I'll head to the Sunbeam Ruins to see if any of my old clanmates would like to join us."

"Thank you! That's my boy!" Lauren said, patting his head with her weird, fleshy 'paws' that weren't
quite paws.

Thus Zuu traveled to the Hewn City, the Light city he had called home before he immigrated to the Sea of a Thousand Currents. He didn't have to look hard for a group of Spirals to talk to; in fact, his targets actually found him. A group of dragons, just barely grown into their adult forms, unexpectedly surged out of a sketchy alley. They circled around him, pulling at his wings and legs, asking him questions so fast he couldn't understand what they were saying. In that moment he wished he'd tried harder to convince Lauren that this was a bad idea. Mustering his most commanding voice, he yelled, "Get off me, you writhing miscreants!"

The teenagers let go of him, three Spirals staring at him with intense eyes. The biggest one -clearly the leader- laughed in Zuu's face. "Miscreants! What a fancy word this posh dragon uses! Hey, Marcus, look at this guy's eyes. He's from the Sunbeam Ruins like us."

The other male, now known as Marcus, got right into Zuu's personal space to inspect his eyes. "I'll be damned, you're right!"

"Marcus, Merchant, back up," the third dragon said. She was spiraling too, but in a way that seemed wary instead of entertained like her friends. "We don't know who this guy is or what his intentions are."

"Your friend is right. It would be wise to listen to her," Zuu snapped, taking a few steps to reestablish distance between him and the punks. He was losing hope for the Spiral initiation endeavor every minute that passed by. How could a sassy, disrespectful breed like this ever coexist with the polite, kind residents of Whitetip Cave?

"Well what are you here for, then?" The male called Merchant crossed his paws and rested his head on them, dramatically pretending he was dying to know the answer.

"If you must know, I came here searching for any Spirals that would be interested in joining my clan. My Lar, Lauren, is interested in expanding our lair to include your ilk. She is not easy to dissuade, so I'm fulfilling her request."

Marcus burst into knee-slapping laughter. "You actually obey your Lar? What a los-"

Before he could finish, the young Spiral fell asleep and crashed to the ground like a bowl of dropped spaghetti. Rolling his eyes, Merchant flew over his friend and scoffed, "Why would we want to join your clan? We have everything we need right here!"

He gestured around them to prove his point, but the crumbling ruins and hunger-stricken faces of passing dragons completely undermined his words. Pity crept its way into Zuu's mind as he remembered what it had been like for him as a youth in the Hewn City. With a kinder tone of voice, Zuu responded, "My clan in the Tsunami Flats always has plenty of food, the lair is structurally sound, and all of us are happy and healthy. I'd wager that's better than what you have here. The offer for you to join still stands, even though you've been quite rude to me."

"Yeah right, like we'd ever join you-"

"I'll join your clan," the female interrupted.

"That's not funny, Hurricane," Merchant said nervously.

"I'm being serious." The female, Hurricane, stepped away from her friends. "I want to sleep in a soft bed for once, to not have to wonder if I'll get to eat today."

"You can't leave me!" The cocky tone in his voice was replaced with worry. "We made a promise to be together till our scales rot away!"

"Then come with me."

"No! I can't believe you'd suggest leaving our home! Ugh, I'm not dealing with this crap."

With that, Merchant picked up his unconscious friend and stormed off, muttering curses. Zuu was surprised to see a few tears drop as the young Spiral flew away. Turning to face his potential new clanmate, he asked, "Are you completely sure? Moving to a new domain, a new lair, is a huge decision."

"I'm one hundred percent sure this is what I should do. I'm sad to leave my friends..." at the word 'friends' she hesitated, making Zuu think she was talking about Merchant specifically, "...but I would rather be friendless with a full stomach."

"So be it then. Let's take you to Whitetip Cave, where you'll meet Lauren and your new clanmates."
