Once a dragon whose only fate was to be exalted, Bramble did not wish to serve the Windsinger. Despite that, he knew it would be his destiny. His sister Margred was also supposed to be an exaltee, but managed to escape just before. Wanting to follow in her footsteps, he also escaped his fate and fled his clan. It didn't take long for him to find out where his sister had gone—clans could remember her snappy attitude.

Along the way, Bramble found himself protecting dragons who needed help. His gallant deeds earned him love in Sornieth, and it was no surprise Aislinn had heard of him when he arrived at the Empire. Bramble told her of his search for his sister, and Aislinn reintroduced them. Although Bramble was happy to see her once more, Margred didn't feel the same. Her new form had changed her, and possibly not for the better. She scorned him, citing his refusal to help her escape, and turned her back on him.

Dejected, Bramble had nowhere to go. He looked around for help, but found no one in the empire would. Except for one dragon: Heqet. She saw him sitting in a corner alone, with nowhere to go, and offered safety at her den. Bramble followed mutedly, feeling sad. Heqet wasn't entirely able to understand, as she always had her brothers to lean on, but quickly was drawn to him. It turns out that Bramble had once saved her in the past, and they bonded over that shared experience.

It didn't take long—about six months—for Bramble and Heqet to propose to each other. Bramble was happy that he now had family in the Empire, and found that the Navanthes were an eccentric and kind group. After their marriage, it didn't take long for Heqet to lay a clutch of eggs. Bramble was proud of his hatchlings, watching them both with pride.
