TAENTH The Humble Progenitor | Messenger | | Mate to Senth

Onyx hated her. There was no questioning that. But she had nowhere else to go, and Onyx had received his orders from Shadowbinder, so he allowed her to stay. She fufilled her duties as the progenitor. After that, he didn't look at her. Obsidian came. Kayerith soon after. She tried to look out for Obsidian, but he was brash and abusive, and any attempt she made to discipline him resulted in being reprimanded by Onyx. She focused her attention on Kayerith. "You're just as important as they are," she'd whisper to him, watching Onyx and Obsidian out of the corner of her eyes. "You are powerful. You are beautiful. Don't forget that." He never believed her. She scarcely believed herself. Their eggs hatched, and were immediately sold off. Two of them were sent to the war for dominance. She wondered what was happening to her children. Thinking about it made her head spin with worry. The children she never met. She wished she could see them. She tried to distract herself with Kayerith. Once Kayerith reached manhood, he left her company, no doubt embarrassed by her. He often kept to himself. She followed in suit. She was trapped in her own home, her new home, the home she was assigned to. She had never felt more alone. She overheard the new coatls talking about genetics, one night. Curious, she asked about it. They explained that any sort of genetic trait could be replaced with genes one could purchase. Even breeds. She stared in the murky river, staring at her ugly, fluffy face. Could she really change it? She thought of the years of abuse, and decided to take action. She started hoarding treasure, pillaging and selling old trinkets, growing her pile, before she finally had enough. She closed her eyes as the gene took place. It hurt, blindingly so, but when she opened her eyes, she was no longer hideous. She was beautiful. She tried not to burst into tears. For the first time in her life, she felt worthy. After her last flock, she finished with her genes, and happily presented herself to Onyx. He was pleased to see how much she had change. He was also dumping her. She was stunned. He explained about how their kids just never appealed, and that it was a "waste of effort", but she barely listened. All she heard was how, after all the effort she'd gone through, he was leaving her. She couldn't breathe. Her world felt like it was crashing harder than an asteroid. He promised to take care of her. He gave her a companion and a new mate, and moved her nest to a nicer part of the den, but it was all for naught. She would've been happier with nothing, nothing at all, but Onyx.
