He was welcomed into the clan in an awkward way.
The leader, Onyx, was very welcoming. He greeted him with a warm smile, and showed him around the territory. He showed the fae around the lair, and presented him with one of the finest nests. He even gave him a familliar - saying that it seemed to suit him. Senth was flattered, and he felt right at home.
And then Onyx introduced him to "his new mate".
And this is where things went downhill.
His new "mate" scowled as Onyx addressed her as such, and she sighed as he left, staring out after him. Senth asked for her name, but she did not reply.
He learned from the other dragons that his new mate, Taenth, was Onyx's mate, but he had left her due to displeasure with their young.
He started to understand why she may be displeased with him.
He approached her and tried to explain his understanding of the situation. She turned and left him midsentence.
Okay. Maybe another way, then.
He tried eating with her. She picked up her food and walked away.
At night, she tried to distance herself as far from him as possible.
He spent the next few days trying to get something, anything out of her, a word, a nod, eye contact,
She snapped at him one day, saying "Mate or not, my heart will always lie with Onyx! Can't you see that?!"
He replied with, "Of course I can. I don't want your heart, I want your friendship."
She blinked, and flew off.
And that night, she slept next to him.
They reached a mutual understanding, and grew close, more as partners than mates. Senth understood that she would never love him, and he was okay with that.
He tried to deny it to himself, but he was growing quite fond of her.
He wondered if Onyx knew what he had given up.
