A barrel is found in a cloud of acrid white smoke, just... sitting there in at the side of a well-used path. Unmarked, unclaimed. Smoldering.
The inner wood is not damaged enough to lose integrity and leak - yet - but a shallow exterior layer of wood, rather than charring, feels punky, as though it might crumble at a firmer touch. And cold.
Stranger still, no other passing dragon seems to notice it is there, flying over without a glance, or if on foot, veering around it in the unthinking way of the preoccupied.
Through the sharper odor of the dissipating smoke, the barrel smells of old rotted logs and, faintly, of magic.
If no one else can see it, then, is it for him?
And so, Kinokino opened it.
Within the barrel, preserved by a slowly fading magical chill, is a cargo of something oddly ordinary, fish. Though, these strange creatures, suspended for the time being on the edge of life and death, feel and look like no fish found swimming near the surface; they seem to be mostly stomach and mouth.... And teeth.
And beneath them, there was a Fae, too.
