'Of all the dragons, Ice dragons are the least emotional, carefully preserving the world around them to be later analyzed and catalogued'

Where other elements rot and fester, Ice preserves. The overwhelming cold of the Icefields is capable of preventing even the decay of magic. Thousands of sleeping souls lie entombed beneath the frozen dirt, some more restless than others. Like all things, however, Ice is not immune from its own fate, and when the thaw comes so too do consequences.

The Moon-Kissed Constructs are an Ice-based subspecies originally developed in 2018. In the years since they have undergone many changes, and now I am pleased to present them in their finalised form.

This subspecies aims to explore the darker horrors that lie beneath the peaceful snowdrifts and mountains of the Southern Icefields, and why Plague is such an important counterpart to Nature.

Lore

The cold of the Icefields endlessly consumes. Deep beneath the snow, countless bodies are imprisoned by the frost where not even time can touch them. For some unfortunate few, their preservation is so perfect that their magic is trapped with them within their grave. Though these dragons can be raised as servants to necromancers, or even talented Ice dragons, they lack a true soul - no, only the rarest few are truly buried whole. The most unlucky of dragons, those swept under an avalanche or lost to a raging blizzard, are trapped in endless sleep inside their own corpse, where they often relive their final moments as they wait for escape. Some will find it, a crack in the ice that they can slip through into the Ether, but for those who cannot Sornieth is not without mercy. Reprieve comes with the Blue Moon, known to dawn the sky once every ten years.

When the light of the Blue Moon touches the Southern Icefields’ frozen wastes, the ancient elemental magic locked within the snow seeps free, and reacts with the dregs of power that still cling to those that the blizzard claimed too quickly. True life cannot be restored, but the tenuous link between soul and body can be returned, allowing these dragons to rise from their graves as frozen constructs, marked by the moon’s pearlescent light.

Protective Runes

Moon-Kissed Constructs still retain their soul, or what their clan hope to be their soul at least. However, their link to their body is weak; the only force holding their soul within them is the ice that still inhabits their body. Heat is their nemesis, and without magical protection a journey outside of the Southern Icefields is lethal. The most powerful wards available to constructs are inscribed as runes into their ice. Direct contact with flame, however, will quickly thaw their protective spells and break their soul’s prison.

External Threats

Constructs have been successfully raised by ice-affiliated liches from time to time, though necromancers have yet to see any results from their own attempts. These masters of ice magic are able to forcibly control the constructs by manipulating their infused permafrost, and so many constructs choose to either go into hiding in the hopes that no such elementalist will find them, or seek out the protection of a powerful clan.
