Xanthe once served a drsgon called Shalmanizar, a ruthless plague of a dragon the color of blood. She and her mate had followed him across the land taking what they wanted and leaving few survivors. Archereus saw through the small group of bandits when they approached and put an end to theiron leader with a mighty blast of furious ice when Shalmanizar attempted to rise up.

Awed and put to shame for following such a despicable shade, Xanthe and the others were put to trial and given the choice to disband or remain and serve the clan they had attempted to raid. Xanthe and her mate remained, pledging themselves to the powerful alpha of Clan Icefallen. The rest were allowed to leave with their lives, but nothing more. Shalmanizar left very little behind, but a lone egg in the nest that he and his mate had kept.

The hatchling was charged to Xanthe and her mate, for they had no living young to care for. And the two were meant to become warriors for the clan, to fight and hunt in Icefallen's name. However, for Xanthe's mate, the solemn Noc that had accompanied her through so much of her life, would not see their new adopted child.

Shade would be murdered, defending Icefallen from the dragons he once called allies under Shalmanizar. They had come in the night seeking vengeance of him and his mate. Xanthe would kill them all, but she could not save her mate who lay broken under the claw of Shalmanizar's mate Tyberus. The vengeful mother of a child never wanted.

Xanthe's grief would not end when she bured the bones of her fallen matell and best friend. On the night that her promised child would be hatched, the seed of a truly evil dragon, another dark spirit would come into her life. A dark, bloodthirsty beast came into their midst, broke into the hatchery, and destroyed a life that had no chance to truly begin.

The widow was nearly driven mad with grief, the murderer was not punished as she would have had him punished, and his escape left her bitter. What nearly destroyed her was what she saw as betrayal; leader to be Loken befriended the beast and let him live.

With these things behind her, she threw herself into her work, helping young fighters train into strong warriors. One of those young fighters would bring a new light into her life. Raven's kind heart and gentle, patient nature would warm her cold, bitter heart and melt away some of her sorrows. She had never expected to love again, or be loved, but he accepted her and saw beauty in her scarred exterior. She could finally begin to feel peace once more.
