The gold coin splashed into the lake, sinking into the depths until it was too deep for her to reach. It was just visible below the water, partially covered by the small grains of sand lying lazily at the bottom. Valentia frowned, getting up and dropping the water-soaked stick and picking up her water canteen. She would never be able to get that coin back out, not after hours of trying. She wasn’t too sure if it was hours honestly, but it sure felt like it was. The sun was low in the sky and the backyard of the manor was already getting dark. Looking behind her towards her house, she saw her family moving around in their respective bedrooms, the lights bright and welcoming. She smiled, promising herself that she would return home soon. She just had one more thing to try before she gave up for the night. Her knees hit the soft grass as she dunked her hands into the water in front of her, taking a deep breath. She had done this once, without even trying. Just for a minute. Maybe, maybe just once more…. “Come on, come on,” she whispered, her voice no louder than a breath of air as she scrunched her eyes shut and willed all her energy from the middle of her chest towards the palms of her hands. The water was cold, freezing her to the bone, but still she just concentrated even more, thinking of nothing else except the power she held between her fingertips like the electricity bouncing through the cables deep in the Shifting Expanse. Slowly, keeping her concentration from dwindling, she pulled her hands up slowly, opening her eyes to stare at the coin. Nothing happened at first. The coin kept its place at the bottom of the pond, with no movement whatsoever. However, the longer Valentia was there, the more the water around her hands rippled. They were small at first, as if she were wiggling her fingers even though her hands stayed still, numb from the cold. Then they became bigger, ripples turning into soft waves rippling away from her body and lapping up towards the grass towards her. “Go.” Her whispers urged the water to turn the ripples away from her, somehow lowering itself deep into the water towards the coin. “Go.” Intensity filled her voice, and the ripples moved faster, creating air bubbles that floated towards the surface. “Go.” The coin moved. Just half an inch, like something nudged it. Then it moved again, being nudged up towards the dragon. She smiled a bit, keeping her teeth clenched as she continued her encouragement. The ripples turned into a form, unrecognisable in the water, but it circled around the shiny object, over and over until it wriggled its way underneath the coin, raising it up even more, then as if it were just a leaf from a tree, the treasure floated up towards the surface. Three small fish popped its head out of the water, a pale translucent white one and two deep purple ones; the white one was the colour of ocean foam and the purple ones were as dark as the deepest parts of the Sea of a Thousand Currents. She smiled at them, moving one of her hands toward the creatures. The white one leaned forward; the smooth, cold feeling made her scales sting but still she laughed. She grabbed the coin that was balancing on the top of one of the purple one’s heads, thanking them. As if they understood what she said, they spun in circles and dove back into the depths of the pond, waves turning into ripples turning into the still water of the lone pond. Back in bed, Valentia flipped the coin into the air as she lay on her bed, thinking about the fish that she had seen outside. It was late now, her parents long asleep, yet still she thought. As far as she knew, her parents had none of the powers she had; at least, they had never mentioned it. Was she the only person that had it? Was she the only one that knew about it? Questions filled her mind as she held the gold coin close, her eyes shutting slowly. “Somnos,” she said, her last words before she drifted off into a dream where she was underwater, breathing through bubbles larger than her head and talking to schools of fish that spoke of buried treasure and the death of the universe. |
