9S is a Scanner type Android who served during the 14th Machine War. He has an attack function but is an android that specializes in investigative purposes—a member of the automated infantry squad, YoRHa, who triumphs in hacking-based information collection.
Being a Scanner model, 9S is naturally curious about the world around him—especially in regard to the machine lifeforms. Usually working alone, he, along with other S-type models, is deployed on the frontlines and acts as YoRHa's main intelligence gatherer. According to A2, 9S is a "high-end model", implying he is among the newest Scanner types. Being the newest model, he is more likely to dig deeper into YoRHa's secrets than his peers and often asks questions that those around him say he shouldn't ask.
