She passes most of her days resting in the safety of the deeps, adrift among the bottom feeders and shipwrecks. In years past she would join them in their feasting upon whatever carcasses drifted down, but years have passed and she has grown, and her appetite with it. Now she must venture to the surface.

Necessary as they are, she makes these journeys reluctantly. As the light grows stronger, as the calming pressure lifts, she feels a change come over her–the quicker currents driving her muscles to work against them, the length of her body flexing and coiling, and then the gathering energy that sparks along her flanks. The sky above meeting her scales is a danger, but not to her.

The surface waters churn at her presence; the clouds gather, heavy and dark. As she breaks the surface, the first spear of lightning crashes down to meet her. The sudden tumult catches any creature unfortunate enough to be nearby, any ship that tries to fight through it doomed to shatter and sink. She is no hunter, not really; all she must do is swim, let the twist and thrust of her body drive the storm ever higher, until the casualties of her presence succumb to the waves.

Her bottom-feeding friends rejoice at the bounty. This is some consolation for the destruction she’s wrought to sate her hunger, as she sinks back down to feast.
