"In our endeavors to recall to memory something long forgotten, we often find ourselves upon the very verge of remembrance, without being able, in the end, to remember."

Acheron isn’t a very stable dragon, but not in the way his mother is. Rather than being violent or furious, Acheron just acts out in an attempt to get attention, which has led to him being pulled into many different directions when morality comes into play. He’s desperate for any form of affection, whether it be from his distant mother, his unfeeling caretakers, or even the dragon he slowly grew to love. He’s rash and quickly paranoid, worried that he’s been abandoned again, even when only the slightest negative emotion is shown towards him. He could have easily been an exemplary dragon, if only his situation had been different. Rather than using his excellent swordsmanship to cut down any of his mother’s enemies, he could have become a loyal warrior to a noble cause. Rather than using his excellent wits and memory to track down new necromantic texts for his mother, he could have become a celebrated scholar. But everywhere he had to run was never any help. Sure, he had places to go, but they wouldn’t help him. His father already had another son and was completely unreachable, he didn’t even remember his brother, and his mother never spoke about her kin. He was trapped in a box for most of his life, until he was finally given the chance to be exposed to a new place, a crime den. It isn’t a wonder that he’s not the pinnacle of dragon morality.

Acheron wasn’t a particularly wanted or loved dragonet. The only reason he was hatched was so his mother, Achlys could amass more power for herself. She wanted an heir who could rule the world after her, or at least bring her back to life to continue ruling, and when a skydancer named Luc found her and promised her an Emperor if she carried his eggs, she agreed. When Acheron and his brother hatched, Achlys didn’t show much interest in either of them, only keeping Acheron because she deemed him fitter than his brother.

Acheron’s youth was slow and empty. He had no playmates, no way to see anyone besides his mother and the two strange dragons that would watch him. His mother called them her ‘pets’, but the veilspun called herself ‘Meg’ and the wildclaw ‘Alecto’. They rarely left him alone, always keeping an eye on him. He was too precious to Achlys to lose, and she would never go crawling back to Acheron’s absent father for another heir. With Achlys fading to the background, Acheron treated Meg and Alecto more as his mothers, though once he reached maturity, Achlys took more of an interest in him, taking him to the tombs she hadn’t cleared out yet.

It turns out, raising an emperor requires more dragons than those equal to the amount of heads it had. The four dragons she had gotten from Luc as a first gift were nowhere near enough to power up the emperor, so Achlys had been raising more, and now she was going to train Acheron to do so too. She never let him raise anything, but she taught him all the chants and steps to do so. Soon, he was a formidable dragon. Naturally imbued with a good memory and an excellent sword arm, he quickly rose above and beyond his ‘family’s’ expectations of him, and eventually Achlys let him up to the cliff town for the first time.
The first thing he did, search for his father.

Meg had told him about meeting Luc and accidentally leading him to Achlys, so Acheron had a place to start. The local tavern was run by the same two guardians that Meg had met, and they vaguely remembered a shadowy Skydancer, though they could never agree on his name or in what season he came. As Acheron already knew these things, he asked for more information, but neither knew what happened to him after he left the tavern. Acheron went home after that and tried to get more information out of Meg, though she remembered nothing else, and was desperate enough to speak to Achlys, though she cut him off immediately. He gave up and promptly moved out of the graves.

An underground fighting ring in the town above his childhood home was his primary source of income. He’d spend his days sleeping and his nights fighting whatever new dragon came to challenge him or was pitted against him by the ringleader. It was just barely enough to keep ahold of his small room above the town’s botanical store, and he wasn’t happy with his life. That was until he noticed a new dragon one night. A black and red aberration with fury in his eyes. An associate told him that this was the dragon known collectively as Cerberus, and that he often stopped by with whatever new girlfriend he had to show off in the fighting ring. He was yet undefeated and no one had threatened his position in years. Mostly because of his insistence on snapping the neck of his competitor.
Acheron tried to avoid him, but when Bledryn, the ringleader, called him into the ring, he knew he was dead.
His competitor was Cerberus.

The fight was terrible.
Acheron was usually the quick and clear victor of every fight he was in, but this time, the fight dragged out for an hour. Cerberus was formidable and his arrogance didn’t impede his battle prowess at all. It was like trying to fight a two-headed viper. Whenever Acheron scored a blow, one of the heads would whip around and deal a greater wound. The bets got high enough to set the new record for the gambling rings and small scuffles were even breaking out in the stands over who they thought would win.
Cerberus nearly won.

Trapped under the aberration, Acheron tried to twist out of his grip, but Cerberus held tight. With a smile on both of his faces, he shifted his weight to reach for Acheron’s neck. Fear clouding his thoughts, Acheron took his chance and kicked at Cerberus, unseating the larger dragon and giving him a chance to flee.

He flew and flew for days, delirious with panic and exhaustion. He crashed onto the westernmost border of the Driftwood Drag, pulling himself into the forest to hide. He stayed there for a few days, catching his breath and thinking about his next step. Cerberus might hunt him down if he returned to the Graves. Where could he go?
