The Southern Icefields are no more forgiving towards Ice dragons than they are for anyone else. Epoch has lived this, not only as a result of the Icewarden's distrust towards outsiders, coupled alongside the frozen expanse he grew up in, but largely in part of his heritage.

The Shade. It runs in the family, as Epoch's father would tell him with curbed grief. They're lucky to not have it questioned by the rest of the clan.

Epoch knows better than to ask for the same mercy twice. It's not a badge of pride, nor one that warrants empathy. The best he can do—the only thing he can do—is to master self-control and the curse that was forced upon him. The inevitable hurt that follows as a consequence to vulnerability will come sooner or later, and is best cut off before it has even begun.
