Draugr

Amalia's faithful companion and diligent guard, Draugr dedicated himself to her shadow after she had saved his life. The gruff tundra had been traveling on his own, with no destination in mind but to put distance between him and the Southern Icefield for reasons kept close to himself. In a moment of thoughtless exhaustion, he drifted too close to the ocean's waves and was pulled into a fight with shale threshers. He prevailed against the beasts but collapsed against the current. He would have drowned were it not for Amalia.

Since then he has sworn to follow and protect her, no less mindful of the pearlcatcher than a Guardian is of their charge. He contributes to the Wavespun Rambler his lengthy experiences surviving in the wilderness, avoiding the wrong plants and outsmarting the fiercest predators. A valued resource of knowledge, as the crew doesn't always have the luxury of porting at a town.

Amalia and Draugr's relationship is inspired by mythology tied to the Georgian goddess Dali of the Crags, and the animals she cared for as her own! Her favorite turs could be marked by white fur or singular golden horns, and killing one would have the goddess send snow leopards to descend upon the offending hunter. I first learned about these tales when I was working on a research paper exploring the various origins of the unicorn myth and it's lived in my head rent free since.
