Skyhe crawled his way into the modern world in 1994 among the smoke and debris of Detroit Michigan, his parents being the simple-minded and ever-loving Maxell and Kammi Nightingale. He was the youngest of two, though his elder brother Serus was in fact only half his brother—and loathed him from the second he was born. Skyhe was always the favorite, his parents’ golden child, and Serus spent most of his early years kicking Skyhe around. Layers and layers of hateful shadows built up, which drove the already unstable teenage Serus to murder his parents by moonlight’s glint, leaving the 8-year-old Skyhe to escape through their second-story window, only a torn blue backpack to keep him safe.
Even with a broken leg from the fall, Skyhe managed to stumble and stagger his way into a warehouse, falling asleep among the unfamiliar creaks and grit. He awoke to smoke festering in his lungs and heat flicking tongues through the air—the building, as many in Detroit end up, had been lit with flame. Using his backpack as a shield, he shouldered his way through the back door and ended up tumbling into the Detroit River, washing a ways downstream before sinking deep into unconsciousness. Who found him was the boy who would become his best friend: 11-year-old Xaiko Oleander of the local orphanage. He saved his life, and not for the last time. Not by a long-shot. The orphanage took him in after that, but the two boys didn’t last long before they made their escape into the streets. What followed were nine years of scraping by under a smoggy sky, learning to banish the demons of the streets, and eventually joining forces with a local insurance agency called “Cloud 9,” a most unlikely ally in a raging war against monsters. Meanwhile, Serus was far from giving up his schemes—he hired a demon of his own to conquer Cloud 9 and take down Skyhe once and for all. The demon, “Dani,” would succeed, ripping Cloud 9 to tattered shreds and sinking his claws into Skyhe’s mind. The demon-possessed Skyhe was led to Cloud 9’s skyscraper roof, and forced to detonate it and leap to his death, Xaiko watching on the streets below. However, the world’s gods had decided they weren’t done with him—71 years later, Skyhe awoke to a rusted hospital bed and soot blackening the rubble of his crushed city around him, no idea where or when he was, or why he had been put here. But he was alive—and Xaiko was, too, a few miles away in his own ash-soaked pile. Together they were pulled by the stars and the gods to an island far north in the Hudson Bay: the island where Skyhe would assist in completing a prophecy in a world unknown, battle demon-energy-induced memory loss, and meet his soulmate, Jay, who would help him cast back his shadows once and for all.
