Raizu Capricorn had never thought he would amount to anything more than a rabbit-tracker for the woodland Inertia pack, hunting and working and fearing the dark with every breath of his lungs. Inertia was his home and often his prison, barely noticed by his parents and perhaps too much noticed by his brother, who often caged him in under imprisoning safety. Raizy was always conditioned to stay safe, to stay cautious, and nervous habits raged on into teenage awkwardness.
On one of his hunting trips, somewhere between his footfalls in the northern Canadian woods, he nearly got to learn how gruesome grizzly claws can be when they’re defending hibernation—but the bear of his path was killed by a woman protecting a young girl lying in dizzy terror against sweat-stained snow: Letty Skylark. Letty, lost and seeking her brother Majest, was put under Raizy’s care by the bear-slaying stranger, and together, they tracked Maji to a nearby clearing. There was an instant, sparking connection that lit off between Raizy and the boy with freckle-sprinkled cheeks, and Raizy could not let him slip away, joining the siblings in their new island home. But there was no time for budding romance, not at first—Raizy and his new companions were forced into battle against a demon that would force Raizy to face his fears in head-on combat. It was a god-given light power from Komi the Deliverer that allowed him to save Maji’s life, showing him the way through the fears and doubts he had always been taught to clutch close. He could have stayed there with Maji forever, but he let his weaknesses come creeping back in, let his brother steal him away back home and wash four years away in an endless stream of regret. All Raizy could do was miss Maji like the tide misses the moon, and curse his compliancy until he was dry in the throat. But he broke free—found his way from his brother’s chains and prayed to every god beyond the clouds he was not too late. And although he had to fight death and blood and moons wasted to get there, he reached the side of the boy he loved, and proved just as the sun always returns after the darkest hour, so will he. |
