For this story, let me first paint you a picture. A lone dragon wanders the Shifting Expanse. If anyone were there to see, they could see him stagger with exhaustion in the heat. He is staying on a steady course for an oasis, a spot of shade in this seemingly endless desert, occasionally pausing to drink water from a cactus or eat from the pack he carries. He does not know it yet, but he is headed for the Viridian Labyrinth.

Can you believe that this dragon was once me? It’s true, I was once a lonely wanderer on the Shifting Expanse. Would you like to hear how that happened? Very well, very well. Let’s see…

I was born among the twisting cables of the Lightning Farm, to a clan in the service of the Stormcatcher. All my life I was known as a dreamer, a fool with his head in the clouds. Among dragons who wished to learn of the world by changing it, I wished to learn by listening. I rarely joined my sisters and parents in their work, preferring instead to watch and take notes.

I was still a lightning dragon, oh yes, and I ran my own experiments, but they were odd and solemn. Instead of cackling as the electricity flowed to where I wanted it, I tested the chemical composition of my food. I researched variants of a children’s story commonly told in my homeland and published a paper on the social events these variants reflected. I passed out surveys to my clanmates to find out how their rigid work schedule affected them psychologically. This was not the kind of work considered respectable in the Lightning Farm.

Eventually I was cast out due to my strange interest in psychology and sociology. I wandered for a while, across the Shifting Expanse. There, I was struck by a miracle. I was crossing an empty patch of desert and searching desperately for water at the time, and out of nowhere came a storm. The wind tore at my whiskers. At one point, I almost lost my pearl! Then the rain came, and even as it stung my hide I was grateful, for I could drink from the torrent like a fountain. Then, as I sucked up water like the desperate creature I was, the lightning came. Echoed by the thunder, it came in sharp bolts, striking the ground time after time. I do not remember being struck.

I woke up later, I do not know how long later. The storm had moved on, leaving water in small, quickly drying puddles. I staggered to my feet- and found to my astonishment that I was not in pain. I knew I had been hit by lightning, for that must have been what knocked me out, but I did not hurt at all. I turned to check that my pearl was still with me. To my immense relief, it was, but that was not what caught my attention. Instead, I noticed a crackling yellow threads, almost like bolts of lightning, crawling over my back and my legs. I found a puddle, and they covered my face and neck as well. Baffled, I continued on, now hoping to find someone who could explain this strange phenomenon.

I did not sleep, nor eat, nor drink. I walked for days without thirst or hunger. I walked for weeks. I could not understand this at all. Now I know that it came of the lightning bolt. Lightning flows through my veins now like blood, feeding me energy like a cable. I do not even technically need to breathe, but it is a difficult habit to break.

Eventually I reached the Sea of a Thousand Currents. They did not want me, not with my odd fascination with science instead of prophecy and faith, not with my strange, lightning-touched hide. I traveled to the Tangled Wood, but they did not want the kind of order I brought, or the light of the Stormcatcher emanating from my skin. I traveled to Dragonhome, but they had no use for psychology when they were so focused on the past, nor were they particularly interested in my blessing.

Finally, discouraged and exhausted, I made my way to the Viridian Labyrinth. There I found this clan, this clan for runaways and outcasts. They took me in and housed me, offered to feed me and give me water. I worried them a great deal by refusing, but eventually eased their concern by explaining my peculiar blessing. They found a place for me in the clan, taking advantage of my lack of weariness to do jobs other dragons had great difficulty doing. I happily joined them, and I have been here ever since. The lightning in my veins has served me and this clan very well. There are so many things a dragon can do when he does not need to sleep
