Pontos

The sea sings to Pontos in his dreams. He feels, sometimes, that it belongs to him or that he belongs to it. He feels, sometimes, that he is the sea itself. Or that he once was, lifetimes and lifetimes ago. He thinks, sometimes, that one day he will return to it. One day in another lifetime, perhaps.

When Pontos emerged from his egg, he looked up at his parents and he blinked and he said, “My name is Pontos.” His parents were surprised but agreeable. If he was precocious and he wished to name himself, well, why shouldn’t he? They never thought to ask where the name came from or why he chose it or how he knew it.
