A festering pile of meat that the Cathedral has decided to dress up and place right outside the front door, like a really messed up scarecrow. Isn't that so nice of them? Don't you want to give the flesh mound a big hug? A strange, small being crawled out of it a little while ago. Now it feels empty. Does meat feel loneliness? Lizbeth says it doesn't. It has been rotting even more in protest of this fact. It believes it can feel whatever it wants to.
Recently, the bugs that infest it inside and out have been forming a sort of proto-society. It neither approves nor disapproves of this, though it does approve of the brutal methods Friedrich employs to stay in power.

It's not clear how it feels about PepsiJared's adoration, though. It's not much of a romantic, but when Charmeine gushes about the antics in the trashy romance paperbacks she adores, it makes a point of listening. Maybe there is hope for PepsiJared yet. He certainly seems to hold a lot of it, judging by the amount of terrible love poetry it's receiving. Although all its surroundings are swathed in a miasma of rot, the poems seem unaffected.

Charmeine is convinced Pupae is a sign from above, the mirrored reincarnation of Sméawyrm's Hellegrut; a flesh pit, only the other way 'round. If this is true, Pupae proves that Charmeine is (as is believed by her followers) a reincarnation of Irene.
The Cathedral has co-opted its being, or more aptly the two have become intertwined. Lumps of gristle hide in cabinet drawers and tiny bones emerge from tree leaves.
