Spawned due to a curse inflicted on Lux as the archaeologist left an ancient crypt, Umbra silently follows his originator everywhere. The shadow Mirror doesn't speak, but will respond to questions from both his "host" and other dragons with nods, head shakes, and other basic gestures. While capable of being apart from Lux, Umbra is significantly weakened when line of sight is broken and further distance increases the effect. Therefore, he generally refuses to leave his originator.

Umbra doesn't seem immediately malicious towards any dragon the duo has encountered thus far, and he is capable of walking among shade-touched monsters without drawing any attention. However, if a beast or other dragon threatens Lux, Umbra is prepared to battle on a moment's notice. This protective nature has led the researcher to conclude that the curse that spawned his shadow is somehow intended to be spread or to reach a destination somehow, and therefore, death of the "host" would be disadvantageous.

Umbra is also capable of morphing back into Lux's shadow, but will only do so when not being directly watched. Observing the change from the corner of one's eye or by using mirrors reveals that the transformation is visually similar to melting into the ground.
