Starlight

"What's your name, child?"

"I'm-" They hesitate, voice catching before it can finish, "Starlight." Starlight, Thornling, Granddaughter of Queen Guinevere? No, they'd just be Starlight from here on out.

They were making the choice to leave, a choice few had had the opportunity to.

They had been born into every privilege, and with magic, too - both from their parents and their high-class training in sorcery. The education was their grandmother's wish, of course. She was delighted that one of her precious grandbabies was such a skilled sorcerer, covered in purple scales, that she could trot out at parties.

Starlight had been separated from their siblings young to attend their training. They longed for a normal family, not one of expressionless masks of dragons watching as they performed and Queen Guinevere's claws sunk into their shoulder. They'd had a sister - one they longed to speak to, to do fun things with like normal hatchlings - but she turned her face away when Starlight reached for her, bitter about their success.

When it came time for their battle training, however, Starlight knew they had to leave. They were sick of being a perfect granddaughter - they were their own dragon now, and a powerful sorcerer to boot.

It was time to go.
