Birza stood out here, like nothing else. Here he was, true earthen royalty. Every scale, every piece of clothing he wore showed his status as one of the rarest jewels of Dragonhome. Which is why it was so strange that he had fallen so far for a dragon in a small, mismatched clan in the center of the crowded, poor center of town. Khagal was a rare beauty, and she deserved to be draped in the greatest fineries. Instead, she wore cloaks to cover her sapphire scales so she could move unnoticed through alleyways. In truth, she would not have caught his eye at all if she hadn't pickpocketed him.

He had caught her afterward, and was ready to drag her into the street, to teach her a lesson about what happens to commoners who dared to defile royalty such as him. Their tussle was quick, and despite years of training he quickly found himself pinned, with the feeling of razor sharp fangs pressed against his throat. He caught his first glimpse of her face, then. Her mask had come loose in the struggle, and when he looked at her, he lost his breath for an entirely separate reason than the clawed forelimb pressing into his sternum. She shoved him into the ground once more, for good measure, replaced her mask, and left the alley as quickly as she had pulled him in. When Birza found the strength and wits to pull himself up again, he followed her into the street, but she had already disappeared.

He came back to the bazaar whenever his duties allowed, searching for her in every glimpse of deep blue. He found her again, in her favored tattered cloak, guarding a stall with an awning of almost the same blue as her scales.
