The Scarred Messenger

I go where the winds take me.

An uneventful Brightshine Jubilee has come as a relief. Still, there are enough uneasy rumors that Henhowl finds he cannot precisely relax.

*

Henhowl is intrigued by the sandsurge, not in the least because he's certain he's met one. It was deep beneath Derecho Canyon, and only for a moment... but it warrants further investigation. He has yet to share this with any of the clan's other leaders.

*

Thundercrack Carnevale has brought what Henhowl spent Brightshine dreading. He has vanished off to Carrion Canyon, ostensibly to seek news but primarily to seek solitude.

Henhowl is one of the clan's most recent additions to the council. Long a messenger, transporter, and diplomat for the clan both internally and externally, he became a vital lifeline between sections of the clan when they were split in several pieces during their time on the Plague/Shadow border. Still, he is the member of the council least often present in meeting sessions, running supplies and facilitating trade between Cindercone and her allies. While even-tempered and kind, Henhowl is often closed-mouth on certain subjects, especially concerning the scars that crisscross his body.

In line with most of his fellows on the council, Henhowl believes that the clan learn the ways of their land, how to defend themselves and prosper there or on distant travels. He places somewhat less of a premium on physical might than the mirrors, and more on folklore and diplomacy—better you pay your way or bargain in distant lands, rather than bring trouble on the clan by the consequences of theft or violence. Alongside Laenalaerr, he is one of the foremost proponents of the clan's new "research" division, and hopes to mold them into a more functional experimental group in time.

Most of the clan regard Henhowl fondly. When he visits other Flights, he is always careful to remember the dragons of the clan who have fond memories of those territories, and returns with delicacies or minor treasures for them. He has a particularly close relationship with the similarly small Akantha, and a rivalry with the short-tempered woodsdrake Fortune.

Craft
As one would expect from an Arcane dragon, most of Henhowl's crafts are minor enchantments and charms. His are usually to be worn, often in the form of strung beads and cloth banners to hang down the neck or wings, and may contain an auditory component designed to sing when the dragon or beastkin bearer flies.

Physical description
Henhowl is a very small, stocky imperial, with an immense wingspan entirely out of standard Imperial proportions. He is covered in scars of many colors and textures, some raised and others cratered, clustering most thickly on his left side. He is largely blind in his left eye, and his longest left whisker is cut short. Despite this, he moves with apparent ease, though he is more comfortable on the wing than walking. He is the clan's master of long-haul flights and an adept swimmer using a combination of folded-wing strokes and full-body undulation. His scent is unpleasant in a very Arcane manner, like charged air and mineral dust, and often carries an element of stale blood.

Combat
On the battlefield, Henhowl's mild manners drop away. He is vicious, striking fast and hard and often underhanded. Unlike most imperials, he will readily feign injury, whisk sand or itching hexes into his opponent's eyes, or bite deep if he feels outclassed, but prefers to rely on a paired short and long sword, which he wields with skill but little flourish.

Origin
Henhowl drifted into Cindercone territory one day, hoping for a rest before moving on, and ended up joining the clan. While he evidently hails from Arcane territory, and produced two recorded daughters in Water, his refusal to tell the tale has left his past a mystery, particularly since he has admitted his official lineage is assumed. He has told tales of the crystalline beauty of the Starfall Isles, the terrors of the Abiding Boneyard and the Shrieking Wilds, an expedition to an abandoned deepwater Maren city in the Leviathan Trench, and, with a shudder, a brief trip through the eerie, death-strewn ruins of the Hewn City. The array of scars that web his body and his clouded left eye speak of some great trial, but he has never given a clear response when asked. Various dragons in both camps have their theories, however, ranging from mundane tangles with corals to breaking free of the Fortress of Ends.

Following grievous injury at the end of the trials, Henhowl escaped to the desert—fearing he might die, and especially that he and Fortune might both die and near one another—and spent two and a half seasons wandering the Carrion Canyon and open desert. During this time, he apparently also made trips to the Starfall Isles, and to the Scarred Wasteland.

Kin
Henhowl has produced two daughters, both in a Water clan. The older of the two moved to Arcane as well, and has produced several children—all remaining in her now-defunct clan or in the Arcanist's service—while the younger is Exalted to Tidelord.

Whatever ancestry the imperial might have is unknown, as he is living under an assumed identity. He has, however, referred in passing to a sister and a cousin who are apparently still living.
