Thorn Trap Sage

B I O G R A P H Y

The eldest of the living sages, Umbra's early life is a foggy memory even to herself- years and years of childhood feeling more akin to a previous life than to any true lived experience. She regards herself as a sage first and foremost, and a dragon second, her needs and wants below the service and existence of the Shadow Flight. Her only standout memory is where it all started- in her youth, climbing deep into a spiral of brambles at night with her only friend, looking to retrieve... something. Something important. And then darkness, fear, consumption. And by the time she emerged, they had woven into her, become an extension of her existence, the vines curling at her whim and lashing out at a thought. Her friend never returned.

It is through these thorny vines that Umbra serves her flight, locking away anything dangerous to them- dragons and beasts lured by flickering lights deep into the woods, before being dragged away by thorny cages, never to inflict harm on the outside world again. She treats this duty with a solemn certainty, as something that is needed but burdensome. Still, she continues, rarely in contact with her own envoy, and even more rarely with her fellow sages.

Umbra is deeply reclusive, and yet this aloof facade covers up deep self-loathing and guilt, for the lives she has taken and the deaths she blames herself for. She is a dragon second because she, in her mind, does not deserve her wants and needs. She only hopes to redeem herself by protecting her home and the dragons within it, even if it means sacrificing her own virtuous nature.

Bromeliad confuses Umbra. Encountered once during the Arcane sage's visit to speak with Asphodel, Umbra was bewildered, having not been aware of the previous sage's passing. Grief-stricken at the loss of a close friend but hoping to reconcile that loss with the companionship of the new Arcane sage, Umbra approached her, and the two spoke at length about the most peculiar of things. Umbra, however, grew uncomfortable, and departed back into the thick woods, vowing not to speak to Bromeliad again.
