How did I get to be a Councillor?
__The story I’ve always been told was that Pitch decided he wanted to fill all of the Councillor positions as soon as possible after my brother, Dusk, was born and became the next Councillor. I was chosen purely because of my blood relations to the majority of the current Councillors.
__As to how I became the Head Trainer, I happened to sneak inside the current trainer’s pack as a hatchling and make it all the way to the training site. The dragons who were battling at the moment let me watch them train from a distance for a couple hours before Pitch came back here looking for me.
__“Shadow, what are you doing? These dragons exist just because we need money. You’re an esteemed Councillor, you don’t have to leave the safety of the Shadow Fortress.”
__“But Pitch,” I whined, “This is really cool! Why can’t I learn to fight?”
__Pitch rolled his eyes. “Fine. I’ll talk to Opal about training you in defensive fighting techniques when we get back. Hey, if you want, you could become the head of defence for the entire Fortress! Wouldn’t that be cool?”
__“No. I want to learn to fight monsters! Evan showed me a few of her moves, and-”
__Pitch made a big show of putting me down and storming towards Evan. “Why have you been filling my grandson’s head with your battle nonsense? He’s a Councillor, for Shadowbinder’s sake!”
__Evan shrugged, saying, “He insisted on it. Since he’s a Councillor, we had to follow his orders.”
__With a big exhale, Pitch pinched the bridge of his nose with his claws and muttered something. I couldn’t catch everything, but I did hear, “… why… shouldn’t… multiple leaders…”
__When he looked me straight in my eyes again, it was terrifying. “I’ll tell you what, Shadow. When we get back to the Fortress, we’ll talk about it with the rest of the Councillors. How does that sound?” When I nodded, he scooped me up again and set off for the Tangled Wood.
__The Council argued for what seemed like hours about what to do with me. Half of them were on Pitch’s side, saying that it would look bad if a Councillor became a trainer, and the other half took the stance that I should be able to make it my specialty.
__They finally decided on my current situation, but it still hurts to think about how many of them didn’t support my dreams.

____If you want me to like you, or even respect you, please try to be normal. Extreme personalities just get on my last nerve, and I can’t stand being around them.
But in this clan, there are a bunch of weirdos who have no concern for the sanity of others.

z9VGk8R.png

____I hate it when I’m not in control. That’s why there are so many clan rules. I have to make everything just so, or else I start to feel uneasy.
Dignity made fools out of us. When I realized I couldn’t do much to prevent the uprising, I started to panic. I had lost my hold over everyone. Now all I could do was sit and wait for dragons to choose sides and hope that the majority chose ours.
I can’t believe this is happening. I have some confidence, but not much.
This lack of control drives me absolutely insane.

____Strength - Strength. Shadow is a strong dragon. That's how he's able to fight and train dragons in the Coliseum. He commands respect because of his strength.
z9VGk8R.png

____Weakness - Shadow isn't very good at diplomacy and other similar matters, so they stuck him in the Coliseum. When he tries to be a diplomat, he stumbles over his words.

The thing with battle is that it isn’t complicated.
__Okay, yeah. Strategy is complicated. Your opponents are complicated. But you usually just have one goal: to win, at all costs, without dying yourself.
__But the Council. They are very complicated. Because I’m gone a lot, they constantly change their goals. I am never up to date on anything when I return, and I have just barely had enough time to comprehend the changes before I am sent back again to the battlefield. I’m a Councillor in name only.
__Today, I came back from a particularly exciting trip, with Raymundo in tow. She had just completed her training and was ready to be sold to train other dragons.
__Pitch met me in the foyer as I approached. “Raymundo. Good to see you again. Go see the battle coordinator, please, I need to bring Shadow to today’s Council meeting.”
__As Raymundo set off, I turned to Pitch and asked, “What changes were made while I was away?”
__Pitch scowled. “You’ll see.”
__I walked into the main Council room. The Councillors each sat at their respective seats, clearly waiting for me to sit down. Dusk made a big show of rolling his eyes.
I sank into my chair in between him and Raven. Pitch stood up and said, “I call to order today’s Council meeting. First on the agenda, I’d like to discuss our current situation with a certain secret that somehow has been leaked.”
__Ebony said, “I can’t believe the Council would do something like this. It’s really mean, and I think we should have trusted those dragons more.”
__Murk nodded, adding, “I think it would be best if we remove all traces of those elements before they confront us, then we can play it off like it was just an unreliable rumor.”
__“I completely agree. That would prevent any damage we take and convince more dragons to take our side.” Dusk looked around the room, and his eyes settled on me. He smirked. “What do you think, Shadow?”
__Crap. The entire Council’s eyes were on me now. Of course, I had no idea what was going on, because I’m only here for meetings, and we hadn’t addressed anything like this before.“I, um, think that the… rumor in question has… um… I mean we should… What Murk said. Yeah. That.”
__Pitch blinked. “Shadow, what exactly do you think is going on here?”
__“To be honest,” I murmured, “I wish I knew.”
__Every dragon in that room gave me looks of disappointment, except Dusk, who I could tell was trying to stifle a laugh. Pitch slammed his hands on the table.
__“You know what, Shadow? I’m sick of your ignorance during these meetings! Dusk, can you do me a favor and explain what’s happened?”
__“Gladly, Pitch.” Dusk’s smirk grew wider as he said, “Before there was an entire Council like we have now and back when we were first starting here, Pitch laced the walls of the Light, Arcane and Plague hallways with all of the elements that make them weak. Somehow, the rumor has gotten out and is spreading around the clan like wildfire, and we need to get to the bottom of it. Honestly, Shadow, it’s almost like you’re never here for anything important.”
__Pitch nodded. “Thank you, Dusk, although we could have gone without that last part. But he is right, Shadow. You should learn how to balance your responsibilities as Councillor with your battle outings, or face the consequences.”
__This wasn’t the first time he’s said those exact words to me. It’s gotten real old, real fast. Clenching my fists under the table, I snapped, “Oh yeah? What would those consequences be?”
__The room became so silent, you could hear a pin drop. Pitch’s purple scales on his face grew redder and redder as we stared at each other. I can’t see myself, of course, but I imagine I looked defiant and almost triumphant, while Pitch just looked angry. Angrier than I’d ever seen before.
__“Shadow,” Pitch said softly, voice dangerous, “If you must know, that would mean expulsion from the Council if you continue at the rate you’re going at.”
__I smiled. “You know, Pitch, I never wanted to be here in the first place. I suck at diplomacy, I can’t manage my time on my own, and I’m always away. Maybe you should kick me out. I’d be just fine with that.”
__The rest of the Council collectively gasped. If looks could kill, I’m sure I’d be fried to a crisp by seven red hot glares. We remained that way for a solid minute.
__Finally, Pitch closed his eyes. “Everybody out. Except Shadow.”
__The Councillors filed out and closed the door, but knowing them, they were probably all pressed up against it, trying to listen to what was going on in this room.
__Pitch sat down. “It’s just you and me now, Shadow. I want you to tell me why you want to leave the Council. I’ll try my best not to get mad, but you have to work with me here.”
__“When you brought me into the Council, you made it abundantly clear that I would have to do a bunch of boring Councillor stuff, but the truth is, I can’t do any of it. I also don’t like it when you make me feel like I’m disappointing everyone when I’m not prepared for these meetings. It’s all just too much, and I can’t do everything, but battle is what really appeals to me. I don’t want this Council stuff anymore.”
__Pitch blinked and cocked his head, confused. “What about the power of being a Councillor? Don’t you want that?”
__“The power doesn’t appeal to me at all,” I said and watched Pitch wince. “I don’t think I need to be the one in this position.”
__“Oh, Shadow. The thing is, yes, you are. You may not see it now, but there is a reason you were chosen to fill the position you currently hold."

I don’t know what the whole deal with the revolution is. I mean, we haven’t been that bad, have we? I guess I’ve never really been there to see how Pitch and the rest of the Councillors act towards Ice dragons.
__But I’ve worked with some before, and I’ll continue to work with them. They’re nice to have when fighting Water enemies.
__When I was visiting the Councillor’s chambers, as I do every few days, Pitch was sitting and banging his head on the desk.
__“Um, Pitch? Are you okay?”
__“No. Shadow, how are we supposed to deal with the dragons who have ideas?”
__“Ideas?”
__“Yes, ideas. Ideas can be dangerous. I don’t want us to run into an issue with the revolution.”
__“Don’t worry, Pitch. We’ll still have plenty of dragons who are loyal to us once everyone gets sorted out.”
__“Yes, but not enough!” Pitch stood up and flew around me in circles. “We have to do something without it looking bad. Like we’re trying to suppress this revolution at all costs.”
__I considered for a moment. Thinking out loud, I replied, “What if, instead of trying to force them, incentivize them to stay.”
__“Brilliant, Shadow. It’s a shame you’re rarely in here, we need you and your good ideas more often.”
__“I thought you said ideas-”
__“You know,” he continued, “it’s up to us. We have the responsibility here to keep total chaos from breaking out.”
__So I guess the reason I’m siding with Shadow is, I’m a Councillor. It’s my job. And I go along with what they want.
