I’m told that I was just born to bring income to my clan. To be sold and leveled and exalted. The dragons I was sold alongside said that I would have to be really lucky to find a clan who was looking to keep someone like me.
__Some of my siblings suffered that fate, and I was scared. I never knew my parents, because I was taken away to be sold as soon as I hatched.
__I was scared, and I was alone.
__But they were wrong. I was found by the leader of the clan I currently call home, and I was treated with kindness and respect.
__And sure, when I was demoted to a civilian for being a ridgeback, I was pretty mad, but I tried to remind myself I should be grateful that I even have this opportunity. I was one of the lucky ones.
__But I couldn’t shake the feeling that I did something wrong. I made the wrong decision. They needed someone like Silhouette, who was consistent and never wavered. And that only made me even more insecure.
__So I started going out of my way to befriend the dragons of the Fortress. In hindsight, I’m aware I probably should have started several really good friendships and built on those before I expanded, but I had been poisoned with the idea of being popular.
__Of course, Pitch, being the angel that he is, kept his word. When he expanded the Council after Dusk’s birth, I was the first one to be considered.
__He said I had something that you couldn’t find in every dragon you came across. And once again, I was special.
__The order of command was simple. Pitch came first since he was the original Councillor, but then he skipped Shadow because of his… inconsistencies, and he was placed last.
__Other than that, the order was the same as the order of Trickmurk Circuses we represented.
__Which meant I was the second in command. Even better than the position I would have been if I’d been accepted right off the bat.
__Would I change anything? No. Not at all. Those experiences made me who I am. And I like the dragon I’ve become, for the most part. Not only that, I have more power than Silhouette, which is more than I could have asked for.
__Much better than I ever could have hoped.

____I suppose my indecisive nature is just a cover. I hate making big decisions because I’m scared of the outcome if I do the wrong thing. Everyone else just doesn’t understand this fear I have.
But you know what? They’re just sloppy decision makers who don’t take enough time to think things over.

z9VGk8R.png

____The problem with other people is that they can’t pay attention.
I change my mind a lot. Like, a lot a lot. It’s not my fault they don’t observe what’s going on with me. I can’t constantly be updating them on my every single emotion shift. They’re the problem. Not me.
When I got appointed to the Council, they told me that any decision I made was final. Which was kind of a problem with me. What if I think that I made the wrong choice and need to go back? It’s a real problem that could happen any time.

____Role in Clan - Scribe/Shadow Councillor - As well as being a member of the Shadow Council, Ebony writes down all the details of their Council meetings and their clan meetings.

z9VGk8R.png

____Strength - One thing Ebony is good at is remembering details. She takes in every little thing. This helps with her job as the Scribe for the Shadow Council.

z9VGk8R.png

____Weakness - Ebony is very inconsistent. When making a decision, she changes her mind multiple times before coming to a conclusion, and then changes her mind again.

Picture this. Pitch has just met with Shadow about his behavior. Shadow storms out of the room in a huff. Pitch follows him for a few feet, then gives up and ushers the rest of us back into the Council room.
__“What happened?” Silhouette asked. She looked at Pitch and batted her eyes.
__Pitch shrugged. “It doesn’t matter now. What matters the most is that we come to a decision.”
__I winced. Everyone shot little looks at me.
__“Now, we need to do something to keep the possibility of an angry Light, Arcane, or Plague attack at bay. Do we have any ideas?” Pitch looked around the room. I started scribbling furiously to avoid having to talk.
__Dusk rose and declared, “I believe that we don’t need to remove those traces from the hallways. Or maybe, we do temporarily, show them there’s nothing just to squash the rumor, and then reinstall those traces later on.”
__“I like the way you think, Dusk.”
__But then Silhouette stood up. “But we shouldn’t do that. We should just take them out for good. I trust those dragons, and as long as we treat them with respect, they wouldn’t have a reason to harm us.”
__“That’s giving them a little too much credit.” Murk glared at Silhouette. “You can’t promise that there won't be an uprising. What if we were to take it out of the halls, but install it outside our chambers, so that we’re protected. That way, they shouldn’t have a reason to suspect us.”
__“That is a terrible idea,” Raven growled. “Wouldn’t the Light and Arcane we add to stop Plague and Light dragons affect us?”
__“Well, it’s not like we’re adding Plague. And besides, we’re supposed to be able to handle a little Light and Arcane. It’s what we trained for,” Gloom said.
__I struggled to write all of their arguments down, focusing so much on remembering everything that was said that I didn’t realize the only sound in the room after a while was the faint scratching of my quill.
__“Ebony?” Pitch put a claw on mine to stop me from writing any more. “What are your thoughts on the matter?”
__“Um… My thoughts?”
__“Of course. You’re in the Council, aren’t you? You get to have an opinion here.”
__“Oh. I, um…” I looked down at the paper I was writing on and scanned the sentences I had just written. “While I, uh, do believe that leaving the, um, traces in the hallways is a little extreme, we can’t just completely lower our defenses.”
__“Exactly! That’s why I think-” Murk started, but Pitch silenced him with a glare.
__“Let Ebony speak.”
__I sighed, continuing on to say, “But Gloom, there’s a difference between one night in a secluded room and being surrounded by our weaknesses in the very place we live in. I don’t believe that’s the answer either.”
__Wow. I felt pretty good about myself and the way I handled that, until Silhouette asked, “Then what do you believe is the answer, Ebony? We can’t just not do anything because that will lead to outrage in the clan, and we can’t have that. We need to come to a decision.”
__There was that word again. I bet she used it just to make me feel nervous and look bad. And it worked.
__“I don’t know,” I admitted softly.
__Dusk, obviously enraged, shot up from his chair. “If you can’t think of any ideas, then just choose one of ours! We need someone to break this three way tie.”
__“Tie?” But Dusk was right. Both him and Pitch had expressed their thoughts for keeping the elements in the halls, while Silhouette and Raven wanted to remove all of them, and Murk and Gloom wanted to defend the Council’s rooms. Three options, two Councillors per option. A three way tie. And I was the tie breaker. “Oh no.” I looked around at all the expectant faces. “And none of you are willing to change your vote?” Everyone shook their heads. Frantically, I asked, “Pitch! You’re the Head Councillor! Shouldn’t your vote count for more?”
__He smiled sadly. “No, Ebony. Each Councillor only has one vote in these matters, regardless of status. You know this.”
__“Wait… Doesn’t that mean you like our idea? Because if you want Pitch’s vote to carry more weight, then our idea would win, so why don’t you just vote for…” Dusk trailed off.
__“No. I can’t… I can’t do this.”
__For the second time for that Council meeting, Pitch kicked everyone else out of the room. Except for me. This time, instead of Shadow, I was the problem Councillor.
__“Ebony, Ebony, Ebony. You are here for a reason. You have so much potential stored away inside of you, and if only you learned how to access it, you could help us lead this clan to greatness.”
__I gulped. “I’m so sorry. I don’t want to make the wrong decision.”
__“Well, what do you think is right? Deep down, what do you want for the future of this clan?”
__My head started to ache. “I honestly don’t know.”
__I like that Pitch is that he knows when to stop pushing boundaries with me. He stopped talking and sat down next to me.
__“Why… Why can’t we bring Shadow back in here? I know he had his little outburst, but he’s still a Councillor.”
__“Ebony,” Pitch replied, “I think that’s the best idea I’ve heard throughout this entire meeting.”
__He left the room and brought back all of the other Councillors, including Shadow. He was still angry, but his cold gaze softened as he saw the emotional state I was in. Once he had been properly filled in on everything that went down (with the help of my excellent notes) he looked at all of us like we were stupid. “Why don’t we just install those little element dispenser things that are outside the element hallways, but alter them to only harm non-Councillors?” Everyone blinked.
__As we left the room, I heard Murk mumble, “Darn it. I wish I’d thought of that.”

Of all the decisions I had to make, choosing the Shadow Fortress was by far the easiest.
__Not only was it expected of me because it was my job, the Council personally selected me to be one of their Councillors, the one marking the 7th Trickmurk Circus, out of all the Shadow dragons they could have chosen. I remember Pitch flying up to me, and he smiled. “This one’s perfect,” he said.
__But I suppose something went wrong.
__Pitch came into my room a few nights after I was brought to the Fortress.
__“Ebony,” he said, sighing, “You met all of the requirements to be the next Councillor but the breed. I’m sorry.”
__Angrily, I spat out, “What would be the ‘right’ breed?”
__“There are several. Skydancer, mirror, imperial, to name a few.” Pitch looked me in the eyes, and I saw nothing but sorrow.
__“So what does that mean for me?”
__Pitch gave me a soft, sad smile, saying, “I’m going to personally see to it that you become a Councillor. This position may not be right for you, but we’ll find one that is.” When I pouted some more, he added, “You belong in this clan, Ebony. One day you’ll realize that I don’t just choose dragons for the Shadow Council based on appearance.”
__I still don’t know what he means by that, but he kept his promise. I’m now the Councillor representing the 2nd Trickmurk Circus.
__That sort of loyalty was what made choosing to stay with the Shadow Fortress when the time came so simple.

EXTENDED LORE

The problem with being a scribe is that sometimes, dragons talk really fast. It’s hard to catch up.
__Not that I regret choosing to be a scribe. Everyone else has to make way more decisions for the good of the clan, and I don’t think I could handle the pressure that comes with those kinds of jobs.
__But weekly meetings are always the hardest because sometimes literally everyone talks over each other. I have to pick and choose which things to write down, which is, of course, really difficult.
__When Darkbringer and Aleena rose to talk about the Ice Fortress and how great they’re doing, everyone started whispering. To make matters worse, Silhouette was sitting right over my shoulder, coughing up a storm.
__When the conversation had finally reached a lull, I turned around and snapped, “Can you stop coughing?”
__“I’m sorry,” she replied in her innocent little voice. “I have seasonal allergies.”
__“It’s the Thundercrack Carnivale.”
__“Light was last month. There are still remnants in the atmosphere.”
__“Then how come I’m doing just fine?”
__Pitch looked over at the two of us. “Is there a problem?”
__“Do you want me to leave?” Silhouette asked, ignoring Pitch.
__I rolled my eyes. Turning around, I said, “No. Just be quiet so I can concentrate on the meeting.”
__Wind was next, and Willow and Fitz stood up to announce, “The Wind flight doesn’t have many issues. But we are starting to consider Dignity and the Ice flight’s decision to leave. We’re wondering, what do we have here to stay for?”
__Pitch clenched his fists. “Remember, the Ice flight is just throwing a temper tantrum. In time, I truly believe they will-”
__“What, Pitch? That we’ll what? Because we’re not planning on coming back until we see a change in the way the Shadow Fortress is run.” Darkbringer flew forward, and Murk had to jump out of his seat to hold him back.
__“Well, just because you have a problem doesn’t mean you have to move out, clear the land right next to us, and set up an identical clan there!”
__“Honestly, why can’t you just think about what you’re doing? Do you really see nothing wrong with the way you rule?”
__I looked at the scroll. I was about at the point where Pitch talked about the Ice flight as though they were hatchlings.
__As I hurried to catch up, Pitch and Darkbringer continued their argument. Silhouette looked over my shoulder and sucked in a breath.
__“I don’t think Darkbringer said that.”
__“Well, what did he say?”
__“I don’t remember.”
__I gave her the worst dirty look I possibly could. “Sit down and let me do my job.”
__At the end of this meeting, we had to swear in Harevis, the new Lightning Ambassador. As time went on, I got better at keeping track of what was said. Finally, Hawkfire and Harevis made their way to the front and she presented him to the clan.
__At the end, the civilians got up and left, but the Ambassadors and some of the Councillors went to Harevis’s initiation.
__Pitch frowned as Silhouette and I got up. “Are you two coming?”
__“Nah. I think I’ll skip it.”
__I got another frown. “Silhouette, you go on ahead. Ebony, can I talk to you for a second?”
__“What is it?”
__“I’m concerned. It seems you and Silhouette have been more at odds these days than usual.”
__I scoffed, “No we haven’t. She just gets on my nerves with her constant annoying fake innocence and fake allergies and fake… personality that I just…”
__He nodded. “I see. But just remember, there’s a reason why you’re second in command and not her.”
