the tragedy

my claws were curled around my antennae, clutching the glowing baubles tightly together. the distinct sound of a lightbulb's fuse going out repeated every time they rubbed against each other, as if they were a mixture of positive and negative magnets — a nigh addicting sound to me, however one that sounded like talons on steel to others.

my advisor sat a distance away from me, paging through a book. i could not discern why. she seemed enthralled by the pages, her dark scales shuddering with every sentence in the indecipherable pages. she had offered to teach me to read, of course — after all, the representative of shadow in the sanctum had to at least know how to read and write — yet i lacked the patience to do so, preferring to stay patiently seated at the top of my bed, a makeshift sleep-place made of the softest materials my advisor could find for me. i was thankful for her. of course, everything was in tasteless hues of grey to me, but she assured me that every plant and fabric in there was quite pleasing upon the eyes. i had little choice but to take her word for it as i settle down amongst the stitched toys and velvet leaves.

each night, i struggled to sleep, tossing and turning in the comfort of this handcrafted nest. my advisor would rush to my side, petting my mane and hushing me into serenity as black tears fell from my eyes. i would cry and sob hysterically, smashing my claws into her scales, leaving white scratches across the skin that she so carefully took care of to look presentable. but she wouldn't mind. no, no matter how many times i hurt her in my terror, she laid her faith in me, and would start singing me to sleep until i finally dozed off in her embrace. when i awoke, i would profusely apologize for the damage i'd done. she appeared unbothered and would merely smile at me, reassuring me that as long as she helped me calm down, it was okay.

whenever i did fall asleep, my dreams were tormented by dark thoughts, dark fantasies and even darker memories, where i would often wake up shrieking in hysterics. i would see the very shadows in my waking moments, crawling at me, the only things with flashes of color in my otherwise monochromatic world. shades of violet crawled at my peripheral vision, stabbing me with events i had tried to hard to forget.

i clutch my familiar close to my chest as another shadowed figure begins to approach. ▹
