Topazz hatched in the Shifting Expanse, but before he was even old enough to talk his family moved to the Starfall Isles, assigned to join one of the multicultural clans helping to maintain the Oculus of the Eleven. He and his siblings had a peaceful childhood, dodging busy scholars as they chased each other through the ancient hallways, learning and playing with fledglings of all flights, breeds, and elements.

Things changed when the Stormcatch Sanctum was destroyed. News quickly spread among the residents of the Oculus, and dragons were scared by this sudden disruption of the ancient treaties. Although none of the dragons living at the Oculus were involved in any way in the Sanctum's destruction, anti-Lightning sentiment quickly spread through formerly peaceful clans, hastened by the magisters' own suspicions.

Topazz' parents tried to hold fast to their duties in spite of the increasing hatred and suspicion, but they could see that the hostile environment was wearing on their children. Eventually, it was decided that the mother would leave with the children, searching out a more welcoming clan while the father stayed behind to continue his work at the Oculus. After weeks of searching, they ended up in a friendly little clan on the Starwood Strand.[wip]
