She realizes she’s done something irrevocable as soon as she draws the sword. It’s idiotic, frankly; she knows better than to handle a mysterious artifact that reeks of magic. But it calls to her, somehow, and she has the pommel gripped tight before better judgement can rule.

It has a sentience, she thinks. It certainly has an awareness, and one it extends to her—she sees double, sees behind herself, sees with a precision she never has before. Thus the blindfold. It’s considerably less disorienting without her own limited eyes overlaying the rich panorama it grants her.

It also wants. She finds herself drawn in certain directions, for no reason she can explain. Unerringly she then discovers one. A creature haunting a village, slowly leeching their vitality, or a cruel despot enriching themself with no thought to the costs laid on others. Raising the sword against them is exultant, pure purpose, and few wonder how she heard of their plight after she’s released them from it.

It isn’t all sunshine and roses, though. More than once she finds the dead inexpertly raised, not hurting anyone, not yet—but still she must cut them down, urged on by an itch that won’t be scratched until they rest once more. It doesn’t feel good to do it, but it does feel right. A fault corrected. A balance restored.
