Biography
Nightmare Walker
Ever since the moment he hatched, Chervil felt that fear was constantly laid on him.
He was hatched in the king's chamber, and his runes shone so bright that he almost looked like the sun, fallen down. His grandfather, King Konunger, muddled him in blankets, trying to extinguish the light.
Another Maz, he heard the king mumbling in a slightly panicked tone.
Some hours after, he spawned his pearl with difficulty. It was large, larger than a newly hatched pearlcatcher's.
He was allowed to keep his pearl, and he didn't forget the wariness in Konunger's eyes.
-
He saw others' dreams.
It was only at night when he tried to sleep. He kept on seeing horrific things unfolding in the minds of other dragons.
Phedca's dreams of the king tearing open two hatchlings.
Helena's dreams of flying free, only to slam down to the ground with her pearl robbed away.
Holden, chained in a cage by a silver link like an unfortunate wild songbird that was lured in by the bait.
And Konunger, the source of all these nightmares, dreaming of the burning woods and thorn tangles and everyone leaving him.
Those were only a few examples. Chervil had seen more. A lot more. Things he didn't understand. Things he wished to unsee. Things that wouldn't let him sleep.
-
Time and times again Chervil heard rumors about this someone named Maz. Time and times again his family compared the youth to him. Over time, Chervil learned who Maz was: another prince, one of his older brothers, and also a dream walker.
They looked alike, both with bright runes and oracle abilities. More and more, Chervil compared himself to Maz.
-
Though all the nightmare viewing and sleep deprivations, the only thing keeping Chervil sane was a servant maid named Catrinna.
They were about the same age, and Catrinna was sold into the palace when she was young. Her nightmares were surrounded by shaking darkness. She cried for her parents, but the cart only trembled with each bump on the road.
While she and other servants were cleaning, her pearl was stored elsewhere until she finished her work for the day.
Taking away one's pearl was cruel, Chervil figured, though it was not a new thing to him. The king held control of his pearlcatcher family members by their pearls.
But Chervil decided that Catrinna shouldn't have her pearl taken. So the young prince stole back her pearl and gave it back to her before she finished working, and that marked the start of his best -- his only friendship.
-
He didn't understand why people said to achieve their dreams. Everything he saw, were all horrific. Those were dreams. Those terrible, terrible fears were dreams. So, why... did everyone want to chase them?
-
If there was one thing Chervil learned, it was that the world ran on fear. Konunger's kingdom ran on fear. The family stayed together because of fear. Weaker populations bent to the wills of the strong because of fear. People spoke of Maz with fear. People compared him to Maz with fear.
One day, he would replace Maz and be a better oracle. He knew how he could do this -- with fear. Everyone would fear him.
... Except for Catrinna. He'll use fear on everyone except for Catrinna.
-
The older he got, the more deranged and sick his thoughts became.
He always had bags under his eyes, and he looked a lot older than he actually was. All those years, he did not get a single night of good sleep.
He hid his growing powers from his family and Catrinna, including that he could now liquefy himself into a black shadow and travel as if teleporting. He hid that he could summon nightmares as black, shifting energy forms, to attack. He hid that others' negativity and bad dreams made him stronger, stronger and stronger.
As the rebellion to overtake the king grew nearer and nearer, Catrinna left the palace for a safer place to work. Chervil decided to stay at the palace however. The two weren't able to talk and hang out as often as they used to, and Chervil missed his friend dearly.
Catrinna leaving him certainly did him no good, as his mind was crumbling. He hid from his family that he became increasingly obsessed with everything about Maz. His behaviors, mannerisms, and interests. He was also interested in his partner, Apparition. Such a pretty name, and he had heard of her powers and beauty.
Chervil trained and studied extensively, until he was better than Maz in every way possible. Now he was going to replace him completely, and everyone would forget about Maz but see him instead. He was going to show Apparition that she should be with him instead; nightmares belonged together after all.
When Konunger fell from grace, his plans in this world became hard to achieve. The whole kingdom was changing, and he was stressed. He didn't even want to stay anymore. He needed to leave and pursue his goals.
He looked back to the world he knew: his family busy figuring out what to do after Konunger's death and Catrinna being away to serve some other wealthy noble. He made his mind.
He transferred all his savings, all his money, along with his noble title to Catrinna. He made her a noble lady, and she wouldn't need to serve another person for another single day of her life. It was all he could do for his friend, and he didn't need those statue and royal wealth anymore.
Having packed up his few belongings, he left, knowing that if he came back, his family, even Catrinna, would no longer welcome him home. Instead, they will present to him with fright and anger.
A part of him feared that, but sacrifices must be made.

The prince is missing.
