Biography

The Last Ocean Spirit
tumblr_oxfad7s9fO1tv56zio4_r1_250.png

The oracle stands from her throne, "Shameful; I don't know why he hasn't been picked yet."

She steps down and Logan stands, stepping backwards.

The serpent hisses as the oracle jerks him forward. A silent shock of electricity runs through him, and he transforms back to his humanoid form.

The oracle throws him to the ground, and he curls up, shivering. Logan watches without any expression.

"I could throw him into the En Core anytime," she threatens, "Get this brat to behave, or else."

Logan nods without emotions.

The oracle strides out of the throne room, leaving the boys.

Logan steps toward his brother to help him up, but Lucas screams and kicks at him.

"Leave me alone!" he cries, and Logan steps back, out of harm's way.

Logan watches as Lucas picks himself up and stumbles away, and he hooks the tips of his lips.

Lucas covers his face and cries, curled up in the corner of his room behind his bed.

Footsteps approach, and then briefly stop. Lucas knows that someone is at the gate now, but he doesn't even care.

That someone approaches and goes to sit beside him. He feels that strange, cool aura. He tries his best to quit sobbing and looks to the man.

Irwyn has a smooth stream of blue hair, dragging on the ground behind him. He is bigger than Lucas; older, and more powerful. Irwyn is an ocean spirit; the only one that Lucas knows. His skin is a pale, bloodless blue, as if he is a earthling who has been drowned. His hair drags and sweeps the steps he walks, and his eye are two constantly flowing pool, devoid of irises and pupils, but deep and clear like the clean, blue sea. Tears are always streaming down Irwyn's face, though the ocean spirit insists that he isn't sad or upset; he is just built like this.

Irwyn is sort of like an older brother to Lucas. He seems to know exactly when he is upset and to come and sit with him.

"We should install doors," Irwyn says now, "I could hear you from down the hall."

Lucas sniffs, looking away.

Irwyn sighs, glancing upward now.

"The Day is coming again," Lucas grumbles. The 15th is coming up fast.

"It won't be you, I promise," Irwyn looks to him.

Lucas sniffs again, and Irwyn gazes at him with pure blue eyes.

"Remind me of our sea," the sea serpent sniffs.

Irwyn's jaw locks, and he stays silent for a few moments.

"Our sea," he gazes away from Lucas, "It was blue and clean. We were free, and we could roam wherever we pleased. Food were plenty, and the sea creatures never had to worry about starving. My brothers and sisters played in the waves, wrestling each others for fun," a faint, bittersweet smile spreads on his lips, "We were free."

"Then the land dwellers came," Irwyn exhales softly, the smile no longer there.

"My kinsmen," he says slowly, "they were all poisoned and polluted. The water out there is almost un-breathable. The land dwellers... they rob from us and dump their filth into the ocean."

He lowers his head, "This sanctuary near the En Core is the only area with clean water."

Lucas lowers his head as well. Irwyn has told him that their parents have been caught by fishermen, and that Lucas's dwarf size feral form results from breathing too much polluted water when he is younger.

This palace is close to the En Core, and every 15th each month, the oracle leads a sacrifice of one life to the darkness, using their soul to cleanse the water. This place is the only area where the sea creatures can live free of artificial chemicals and pollution. Even though food is often times scarce, it is better than the outside, where the water is pure gray and littered with choking plastics.

Lucas has been trying to leave the sanctuary.

He wants to fight back at the land dwellers. He wants to find a way to revert the ocean -- their ocean -- back to the way the older sea creatures and Irwyn say it has been. A clean, free paradise for all. He figures that the only way to do so is to get out there and study the situation, and strike when the time is right.

Of course the oracle doesn't want him to leave. It's too risky, and she doesn't want to attract any unwanted attention. She has admonished Lucas to stop, then her attitude dropped into the deepest sea trench when he doesn't.

Lucas has hoped that Logan, his own brother, will understand, but he doesn't as well. He, alike the rest, wants to stay safe. As long as they have this haven, who cares about a free and open sea; who cares about the monthly sacrifice?

"Do you not really care about your kinsmen?" Lucas sniffs again and questions.

Irwyn turns his head to the side, "I couldn't help them even if I want to." His tone is rueful.

"You don't want to see them," he adds, "Ocean spirits aren't supposed to be like them."

He now falls silent, and Lucas is silent, too.

"...Irwyn?" Lucas finally speaks.

Irwyn looks toward him, "Hm?"

"Can you tell me the old times again, before the land dwellers came?"

Inevitably, the sacrifice day comes. The residents of the palace gather at the theater room. The oracle stands on the stage, a table before her, and a little bucket on that table, filled with paper slips. Irwyn stands by her side.

"Before we begin," the oracle announces loudly, "Do we have any volunteers?"

Silence falls in the room. No one feels like dying for the greater good of the sanctuary today, so no one speaks.

The oracle sighs, and extends her arm into the bucket and stirs. Irwyn watches her, his head subtly tilted toward the ruffling noises.

The oracle looks up and closes her eyes. Lucas knows that she'll be stirring for a while so everyone knows it is fair.

"Lucas," Logan makes his way across the crowd to stand beside him.

"Shhhh," Lucas tells him; this is strange; Logan uses to tell him to be quiet when the oracle draws a name.

"I -- I just don't want our relationship to be cracked if any two of us gets picked," Logan fidgets slightly, "Everything's been so difficult I just -- I just don't want you to not like me if we die."

Lucas studies him, swallowing, "Well, no matter what, you are still my brother."

Logan gazes at him in return, starting to smile in relief at the words.

As if it is a chain effect, the rest of the crowd starts to murmur their possible final goodbyes and starting to make amends to their old, tired rivals. The brothers lock gaze, and smile faintly. They both understand.

"We could go for a swim in the garden after this," Lucas suggests, and Logan starts to reply.

Irwyn clears his throat, looking to the oracle, who picks out a paper slip from the bucket. The crowd instantly quiets.

The oracle reads the slip, "... Lucas. Lucas the sea serpent spirit."

Lucas blinks, seeing Irwyn's eyes widen for he has been studying the ocean spirit's face.

"Wait!" before anyone reacts, Logan raises his hand, "I take his place! I take Lucas's place!"

The oracle gazes at Logan, "Is that so?"

Lucas blinks, "Wait -- wait I --" he grabs onto Logan's arm, who jerks at him, trying to break himself free to doom. The crowd starts to clear a space for them to not get stepped on or accidentally hurt.

Logan shoves Lucas away hard, causing him to fall to the ground on his back. The volunteer breathes shortly, looking to the oracle, "I'll go instead. Tell the pure one to hold him back."

The oracle nods, then glances expectantly toward Irwyn, who steps off the stage toward Lucas, who scrambles backwards, hissing at him. Meanwhile Logan starts moving to the stage.

"Get away from me!" Lucas snarls, arching his back and tail dangerously at Irwyn.

Irwyn gazes at him calmly, "Lucas, I promise that everything will be alright." Everything will not. They're killing Logan, and Logan has chosen this to save him!

"Lucas. Lucas focus on my words; listen. Everything'll be fine. Things will calm down. Please...?"

Lucas glares at the hand reaching toward him, waiting for the moment to strike. Attacking Irwyn is a huge offense; he knows. Irwyn is the only ocean spirit left; he is literally the personification of the old sea. His sea! He doesn't care now. Not this moment. Not when --

Someone screams, and Lucas hears clearly the sickening squish of a knife stabbing into flesh. Irwyn stops reaching toward Lucas and stays in place, his eyes wide.

Lucas's lips slightly part as he stared at the spear that has pierced through the ocean spirit's stomach. Clear water flows slowly from the wounds.

It's a fishing spear.

The room explodes with screams, and the sea creatures scramble, trying to reach the exit. Logan runs to the side of the oracle, who extends her claws, lightning sparks from her fingertips and flared gills.

Lucas becomes aware of Irwyn's voice, calling him forward. Irwyn is slightly hunched over now, gripping on the spear.

"Help me pull the spear out," he pleads to Lucas as the boy steps closer, eyes wide and mouth open.

What is happening...? In the chaos, he seems to see someone lurking on the ceiling beams. Someone with a long serpentine tail, and that someone seems to grin.
