WHUMP! "I AM HERE TO TAKE CONTROL OF THIS CLAN," a distant voice roared. "BRING OUT YOUR CHAMPION!" Such was how the clan was introduced to the warden. Swiftclaw's fins flared in anger. Who dared to challenge them? "Allow me, mother." "No," she said, donning her battle gear. "This is my Charge to protect." She emerged from the lair, somewhat surprised to be met by a Gaoler. Gweneth had foretold the arrival of a warden, but she had assumed that probably meant a Guardian. "You've come a long way, Gaoler." He inclined his head, heavy with horns. "You do me a great honour, champion." "Matriarch," she corrected. "Matriarch Snapback." |
She took up a defensive stance, flared her wings, and bowed. "Well met."
The fight was long, hard, and bloody. The Gaoler's long, thick fur deflected many an attack, but he struggled to inflict any deep wounds to the experienced Matriarch, who had wandered Sornieth alone for untold eons in search of her Charge.
Day turned to night, night turned to day. Finally on the eve of the second day, thick blood running down his legs, white fur stained crimson, the Gaoler fell to his knees, lowered his wings, and submitted his life. "I yield."
The Matriarch, with her bloodied mouth and claws, bleeding from her chest and sides, nevertheless raised her wings and bellowed her victory, her roar echoing for miles. Her children trembled, instinct demanding that they bow.
And as was her right as the victor, his life was hers to do with as she wished.
She strode over to him, looked him in the eyes, and grinned. "Welcome to the clan."
