Chalcurus
The Accursed + The Sculpture + The Proud

Chalcurus is one of the very first members of the peacock sub-branch of the Starbard clan. A proud, vivacious skydancer with a regal bearing, he wore his dazzling cloak with pride.

One moody, misty morning, he went out gathering food and supplies for the Starbard clan, and a passing Warlock decided to make sport of his beauty. He captured him and tethered him to a sturdy boulder, and then proceeded to pull out his feathers and hairs and scales. Chalcurus tried not to succumb to this agony for a long time, but eventually he was overcome, crying out for the members of the Starbard clan to save him. But, too far away, no one heard him except for the Warlock.

After this, Chalcurus was cursed. His raw skin made to ossify into stone, to turn him into nothing more than a statue. Leaving him screeching in agony, the Warlock left, satisfied to have destroyed something that was once beautiful.

Chalcurus fought back against his bonds and the curse as much as he could, eventually freeing himself on a rough shard of stone growing from his own body. The constant movement prevented him from being completely locked in stone, and instead parts of his body began to turn opalescent, precious gem peeking through the prison of rock.

When Chalcurus made it back to the Starbard clan, most were frightened of him and did not recognise him. His first partner - Ocellata - rejected him when she realised who he was, declaring him ugly beyond all bearing.

In time, Chalcurus met Emphana, another peacock skydancer like himself. She thought he was beautiful, and loved the sad proudness that clung to him. She became his new mate, and they were gratified to learn that he cannot pass on his curse to their offspring.

Because his joints constantly ache, he is often still - and sometimes mistaken for a statue by visitors. All members of the clan know he won't live as long as the others, to be so afflicted - and some work hard to try and break him of his stubborn, painful curse.
