BRAHMS
↠ The Librarian

"All in vain; because Death, in approaching him had stalked with his black shadow before him, and enveloped the victim. And it was the mournful influence of the unperceived shadow that caused him to feel --although he neither saw nor heard --to feel the presence of my head within the room."

Brahms is a studious and shy man who prefers books over people. Still considered a fledging mage, he discovered his powers much later in life than most mages and as such feels like he's far behind his peers. Despite not being formally trained or sponsored by a fully certified mage, Brahms is incredibly clever and picks things up quickly. However, his anxiety holds him back from truly seeing his potential.

In his free time, Brahms enjoys playing chess and has made it a habit to play as much as possible in order to hone his skills. One of the people who he plays against is Lio, but he prefers to avoid that scenario at all costs due to Lio's short attention span and flagrant disregard for the "art" of chess.

Hailing from the Sunbeam Ruins and raised in one of the temples, Brahms has never met his biological parents. His status as an orphan means that his surname is the same as Lio's: Lightheart.

Most children would probably pine to know/meet their families but this was not the case for him. Any feelings of abandonment or sadness were quickly buried, his mind preoccupied with the words on the pages of his favorite books. While the other children played together in the yard, Brahms was going on adventures to faraway places. He could be a pirate one day, sailing the Sea of a Thousand Currents, and the next a mastermind detective hot on the trail of his nemesis.

As you might imagine, the other children found him a bit odd. Quiet, they would say, and reclusive. That said, he was far from bullied and many of the other children would come to him when they needed help with their homework. Brahms would gladly help them, explaining everything in a quiet and measured tone. This is how he and Lio came to be friends. They had little in common save for both of them being orphaned (their shared status as "Lighthearts" making them brothers in a way) and their mutual love of adventures and adventurers.

When the time came for him to set out on his own or choose to stay he was offered a job there in the temple's library which he gleefully accepted. Why leave when all of his friends were right here inside the pages of the books all around him? For years he worked and slept in that library, often waking up the next morning with a blanket he didn't remember wrapped kindly around his shoulders.

The day he discovered his magical prowess started like any other. He was stacking the shelves and humming softly to himself when very suddenly a flick of the wrist caused several books to fly off the shelf. Startled, he quickly gathered the books and went immediately to work trying to figure out what had just happened. All of his life he never showed any talent for magic, so why now?

The answer to that question alluded him and he finally had to admit that he would never grow or learn anything unless he took the plunge and finally ask to be apprenticed properly. Much to his surprise he had very little push back and was apprenticed shortly. It's rare for mages in the temple to take on late bloomers, but Brahms had proved himself a worthy candidate just by his virtues and character alone.

He still has a ways to go, but his magic is improving every day. Of course, he still works in the library. There's nothing in the heavens or on Sornieth that could keep him away from his beloved books.
