Here’s the thing: the tea is a smokescreen. Oh, the readings are real. She gives a bit of herself to the leaves, and the future settles over them, a fine layer that can be interpreted with practice. It’s showy, a bit mystical, easy to sell. Vague enough that her customers can choose whether to believe her or not. It’s safe. The leaves don’t find her when she least expects it. They don’t leave her muddled and confused, struggling to tell then from now, or see her muttering incantations and tracing protective symbols on every available surface, trapped in a loop as if she can stave off the future. No, those would be the visions. They come to her like petals on the wind, something flitting across her line of sight, and then she turns her head to find herself elsewhen, watching events play out that may not happen for years to come. Their content ranges from the banal to the bone-chilling, but all of them leave her feeling deeply unsettled in her body, like she’s going to drift away in time. |

So she keeps her head down, and focuses on the leaves instead. The coin. Good fortune, money in the future. An ‘x’, a warning. Trouble on the horizon, coming from the north. Broken trails. An interrupted journey, but not far – the dregs lie on the southwest of the painted compass at the base of the cup. Close to home. Right here in the Plateau, even. Her customers don’t know what to make of their fortune, she can tell. The coatl is clearly skeptical, but the skydancer – the one who dragged them over to Lapsang’s stall in the first place – is peering at the leaves, considering. She doesn’t like to let them sit too long – doesn’t want the fortune to set in to the cup – but she allows the skydancer to look for a moment longer before she dashes the symbols away with a swirl of hot water. She takes her payment and shoos them away, and moves on to the next fortune. |
